What does an elevator apprentice do?
An elevator apprentice trains under an elevator contractor to learn how to install, repair, and maintain elevators, escalators, and chairlifts. In this role, your responsibilities involve interpreting blueprints, selecting proper equipment, assembling parts, performing electrical work and installation, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations. You may handle maintenance duties, including oiling and greasing parts, adjusting equipment, reviewing computerized control systems, and replacing older parts. You also keep accurate and detailed records on all work. Welcome to the International Union of Elevator Constructors. Applying to apprentice with union elevator constructors is an opportunity to work hard, learn while you earn, and enter a stable and reliable career without a college degree or any prior training.

- Applications will be taken from 09/01/2026 at 9:00 AM PST until the 500th application is taken or 09/18/2026 at 5:00 PM PST, whichever occurs first.

*Please note: Aptitude testing will be conducted, tentatively, the week of October 5, 2026. All testing and interviews will be conducted in person. Please plan accordingly.
FEES: You will be required to pay the $25 non-refundable fee and upload proof of education at the time of completing your application.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
- Applicants shall be a high school graduate or provide proof of equivalent educational attainment such as completion of the General Education Development (GED) tests. Each applicant shall submit (upload), with the completed application, a high school transcript, or high school diploma, or an official report of GED test results.
- APTITUDE: All applicants shall pass an examination designed to test the applicant’s reading, math skills, and aptitude for employment in the elevator industry.
- TOOL ASSESSMENT: Applicants will also take a Tool Assessment designed to assess knowledge of basic tools and their use, as well as basic measuring skills.
- PHYSICAL: Be capable of performing the physical requirements of the job without posing a threat to the health and safety of themselves or others.
*Upon selection, pass a drug test. (Paid by the employer).
*A photo I.D. must be presented during the application process.
