Electronics Manager information

What does an electronics manager do?

An Electronics Manager oversees the operations and maintenance of electronic systems and equipment within an organization or retail environment. Their responsibilities typically include managing a team of technicians or sales staff, ensuring the proper functioning of electronic devices, implementing safety protocols, and coordinating repairs or installations. They may also be involved in inventory management, budgeting, and providing technical support or training to employees. The role requires strong technical knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to troubleshoot complex electronic issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electronics manager, and why are they important?

To excel as an Electronics Manager, you typically need a background in electrical or electronic engineering, project management experience, and relevant industry knowledge. Familiarity with CAD design software, ERP systems, and certifications like PMP or Six Sigma are commonly required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help in managing teams and coordinating cross-functional projects. These competencies ensure efficient project execution, high product quality, and effective team performance in a technology-driven environment.

How does an electronics manager typically collaborate with design and production teams to ensure project success?

An Electronics Manager often acts as a bridge between design engineers and production staff, coordinating project timelines, resolving technical issues, and ensuring product specifications are met. They facilitate regular meetings to align on project milestones, allocate resources efficiently, and address any design or manufacturing challenges as they arise. This collaborative approach helps maintain high quality standards and on-time delivery, while also providing opportunities for team members to learn from each other and improve processes. Effective communication and a hands-on leadership style are key to succeeding in this role.

What is the difference between Electronics Manager vs Electronics Engineer?

AspectElectronics ManagerElectronics Engineer

Socomec North America (NAM) is Socomec's organization overseeing all operations in North America.

About This Role

We are looking for a highly skilled Power Electronics Design Engineer with expertise in simulation, hardware design, and testing to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge of high-power conversion systems, PCBA design, and converter topologies (AC/DC, AC/AC, DC/AC, including two-level and multilevel designs), as well as switching and control techniques, simulation methodologies, and high-power testing. Key responsibilities will include design, certification, testing, and leveraging simulation tools and techniques to model, simulate, and optimize various power electronic systems and components.ย

Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities

  • Develop and implement simulation models using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PSpice, PSCAD, PSIM, and other relevant software to represent power electronic systems and components.
  • Design and implement advanced control strategies for multilevel inverters to achieve optimal performance in diverse applications such as high-power Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and Energy Storage Systems (ESS).
  • Conduct Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing for power electronics systems development, ensuring seamless integration and functionality using OPAL-RT's and Typhoon's real-time simulators.
  • Design and optimize PCBA schematics and layouts using Altium Designer to ensure efficient and reliable circuit board functionality.ย
  • Develop and execute comprehensive test plans for high-power UPS systems (around 3 MVA), including functional, performance, and reliability testing. Ensure tests cover all necessary specifications and standards, as well as safety.
  • Evaluate, design, size, characterize, and control IGBT-based power modules for various applications, considering efficiency, reliability, and performance.
  • Design and analyze AC/AC, AC/DC, DC/AC, and DC/DC converter topologies, controllers, modulation techniques, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards such as UL1778, UL60950, IEC 62040, FCC Part 15, and other applicable UL and IEC standards in all design and development activities.ย Investigate and troubleshoot issues related to power electronics systems through simulation-based analysis, identifying root causes and proposing effective solutions to address identified challenges.ย

Essential Qualifications, Experience, And Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field. A master's degree or Ph.D. is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related industrial experience in the field of power electronics.
  • Proven experience in the simulation and modeling of power electronic systems, with a focus on power converters and inverters for various power systems applications.
  • Demonstrated experience using COMSOL for physics-based modeling and simulation of power electronic systems, including thermal analysis, electromagnetic behavior, and Multiphysics interactions.
  • Proficiency in simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PSpice, PSCAD, PSIM, or similar software packages.

  • Familiarity with the design of magnetic components such as transformers, inductors, ferrites, chokes, and line filters for power electronics.
