How much do electronics engineering technology jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for electronics engineering technology in the United States is $60,843.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $46,000.00 and $70,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is electronics engineering technology?

Electronics Engineering Technology is a field that focuses on applying engineering principles and technical skills to design, develop, test, and maintain electronic systems and equipment. Professionals in this area work with devices such as circuits, microprocessors, communication equipment, and control systems. They often bridge the gap between engineers and technicians, working on implementation, troubleshooting, and improvement of electronic products. Careers in this field can be found in industries like telecommunications, manufacturing, aerospace, and healthcare technology.

What jobs can I get with an electronics engineering technology degree?

Electronics Engineering Technology graduates can pursue roles such as electronics technician, field service technician, manufacturing test technician, or electronics assembler. These positions typically involve working with circuit boards, testing electronic systems, and troubleshooting hardware using tools like oscilloscopes and multimeters, often in manufacturing, maintenance, or design environments.

What are some common challenges faced by electronics engineering technologists in their daily work, and how can they be addressed?

Electronics Engineering Technologists often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex circuitry, keeping up with rapidly evolving technology, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards. Effective communication with engineers, technicians, and other team members is also crucial, especially when interpreting technical documentation or collaborating on project deadlines. To address these challenges, technologists benefit from continuous learning, hands-on experience, and leveraging collaboration tools to streamline workflow and knowledge sharing within multidisciplinary teams.

What does an electronics engineering technologist do?

An electronics engineering technologist designs, tests, and maintains electronic systems and equipment, often working with engineers to develop new products or improve existing ones. They use tools like oscilloscopes, circuit design software, and lab equipment, and typically require technical certifications or diplomas. Their work environment includes laboratories, manufacturing facilities, and field sites, focusing on practical application and troubleshooting of electronic devices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electronics engineering technologist?

To thrive as an Electronics Engineering Technologist, you need a solid background in electronic circuits, troubleshooting, and applied mathematics, usually gained through an associate or bachelor's degree in electronics engineering technology. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, PCB design software, and possibly certifications like CET (Certified Electronics Technician) is important. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help you collaborate on projects and explain technical concepts clearly. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring reliable product development, efficient maintenance, and effective support of complex electronic systems.

What is the difference between Electronics Engineering Technology vs Electronics Engineering?

AspectElectronics Engineering TechnologyElectronics Engineering
EducationAssociate's degree or diplomaBachelor's degree or higher
CertificationsOptional certifications like IPC or FCCProfessional Engineer (PE) license often pursued
Work EnvironmentPractical, hands-on roles in manufacturing, testing, and maintenanceTheoretical, design-focused roles in R&D and system development
Job ResponsibilitiesImplementing and troubleshooting electronic systemsDesigning and analyzing electronic circuits and systems

Electronics Engineering Technology professionals focus on applying existing electronic principles in practical settings, while Electronics Engineers are more involved in designing new systems and conducting research. Both roles are vital in the electronics industry but differ mainly in scope, education, and responsibilities.

Job description

Electronics Engineering Technicians (multiple openings)
Wednesday, July 29th & Thursday, June 30 | 9:00 AM - 12:00PM and 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM
Location: Memphis, TN
Pay: $28/hour
Monday – Friday | 40 hours/week + overtime as needed
Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Electronics Engineering Technician to support the transfer and ramp-up of multiple high-volume SMT production lines from our Mexico facility to Memphis. This role will play a critical part in establishing advanced board-level debug and true component-level repair capabilities for complex server and data center hardware.
This is not a board-swap or tester-only position. We are specifically seeking technicians who can diagnose failures down to the component level and perform precise soldering and rework to recover high-value assemblies.
Candidates who are open to short-term travel to our Mexico facility (approximately 6–8 weeks) to learn existing processes prior to equipment relocation will be strongly preferred. All travel, accommodations, and per diem will be fully covered. However, travel is not required for consideration.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced board-level troubleshooting and component-level debug and repair on complex multilayer PCBAs
  • Diagnose and repair failures across CPU, GPU, FPGA, ASIC, memory, and power subsystems without defaulting to full board replacement
  • Troubleshoot high-speed digital, mixed-signal, and power distribution circuits using schematics, layout files, and diagnostic tools
  • Utilize advanced test equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and power analyzers to isolate faults to the component level
  • Perform hands-on soldering and rework, including removal and replacement of fine-pitch components and BGAs using proper thermal profiles
  • Use X-ray and other inspection methods to validate solder joints and rework quality
  • Analyze POST codes, BIOS logs, boundary scan results, and other diagnostics to pinpoint root causes
  • Conduct root cause failure analysis and identify trends to reduce recurring defects and improve yield
  • Partner closely with engineering to refine debug and repair methodologies for scalability and repeatability
  • Develop and maintain detailed debug guides, repair procedures, and diagnostic documentation
  • Track yield, repair cycle time, and failure trends to support continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support installation, validation, and optimization of SMT, test, and rework equipment during line transfer
  • Ensure strict adherence to ESD, safety, and quality standards when handling high-value electronic assemblies
  • Mentor junior technicians in component-level troubleshooting and soldering best practices
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in hands-on PCB repair and component-level troubleshooting
  • Proven ability to diagnose faults and repair boards at the component level (not just replace entire assemblies)
  • Strong soldering and rework skills, including fine-pitch components and BGA rework
  • Experience with server, storage, networking, or other high-performance computing hardware preferred
  • Deep understanding of board-level electronics, including power architecture and signal integrity fundamentals
  • Experience debugging DDR memory, PCIe interfaces, and high-speed interconnects
  • Ability to read and interpret complex schematics and PCB layout files
  • Proficiency with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other electronic test equipment
  • Experience in SMT or high-volume electronics manufacturing environments strongly preferred
Why Apply:
  • Opportunities with leading electronics manufacturing organizations
  • Competitive compensation and potential for long-term growth
  • Exposure to advanced manufacturing technologies and engineering teams
