Job description

Pay Range

The expected hiring range for this position is: $99,500.00-$130,900.00. Pay is a general guideline only and will be determined by scope, responsibilities, qualifications, and business considerations.

This position is eligible for relocation assistance.

About the Role

Fermilab is seeking a Power Electronics Engineer in our Power Electronics Systems Department. Under general direction, the engineer will plan and perform engineering tasks including research, design, and development of medium to large projects, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and DOE orders. Assignments typically include equipment design, development, material testing, specification preparation, and coordination of manpower for manufacture, installation, and testing.

Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities
  • Analyze data and perform engineering calculations.
  • Develop designs of specific parts, components, or project phases.
  • Create specifications, design documents, and other documentation for complex or major engineering solutions.
  • Apply standard to moderately complex engineering techniques to clear and specified objectives.
  • Plan medium to large projects from inception to completion and bring them to operating status.
  • Estimate manpower, schedule work, coordinate and direct technicians.
  • Take lead role in procurement, manufacturing, installation, testing, and operation.
  • Assist or lead development of cost estimates and monitor budgetary obligations.
  • Review and approve work before resources are committed, ensuring conformance to specifications and cost/time constraints.
  • Serve on or lead safety panels, review committees, and other subcommittees.
  • Provide technical direction to draftspersons, designers, engineering associates, technicians, and less senior engineers.
  • Coordinate and/or supervise technicians and other engineers.
  • Participate in technical conferences and publications.
  • Provide supervision or leadership of a team, including hiring, promotions, performance reviews, training, disciplinary actions, and other duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Abide by all environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited institution with 6+ years of engineering experience, or a Master’s/PhD with 4+ years of engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of Analog Circuits, Control Theory, and Programmable Logic (e.g., FPGA or CPLD).
  • Skills in test instrumentation (oscilloscopes, function generators) and circuit analysis.
  • Proficiency in Altium, LTSpice, AutoCAD, or similar CAD tools.
  • Experience with phased-controlled power supplies, switch-mode power supplies, high‑voltage systems, magnetics, and high‑noise environments.
  • Project planning skills for medium to large projects, including development of specifications and documentation.
  • Ability to perform moderately complex engineering techniques and lead projects.
  • Strong team‑work, communication, and learning abilities.
Work Arrangement

Onsite at the Batavia office. Work arrangement may change based on business needs.
