Electronics Associate information
What is the difference between Electronics Associate vs Electronics Technician?
| Aspect | Electronics Associate | Electronics Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | High school diploma or equivalent; some roles may require certifications | Associate degree or technical certification in electronics |
| Work Environment | Retail stores, customer service, installation support | Repair shops, manufacturing, maintenance facilities |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Electronics retail, customer support, entry-level roles | Industrial, commercial, and technical service industries |
Electronics Associates typically handle customer service, basic installations, and support roles, often with minimal certifications. Electronics Technicians usually possess technical training or certifications and perform repairs, troubleshooting, and maintenance. While both roles work with electronic devices, Electronics Technicians have more technical responsibilities and specialized skills.

Job description
Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has turned bold ideas into world-changing impact advancing science and technology to strengthen U.S. security and promote global stability.
Our mission spans four critical national security areas nuclear deterrence, threat preparedness, energy security, and multi-domain defense empowering teams to take on the toughest challenges of today and tomorrow. With a culture built on innovation and operational excellence, LLNL is a place where your expertise can make a real impact.
We have an opening for an Electronics Technologist / Senior Electronics Technologist to support Site 300 facility, infrastructure, and programmatic work activities. In this role you will maintain, repair, replace, modify and improve programmatic equipment used in S300 firing operations. You will also provide electronic technical support to engineers, scientists, and technical staff by performing equipment performance verification, calibration, and data acquisition. This work supports the planning and execution of programmatic operations for Strategic Deterrence (SD) programs at the S300 firing facilities. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate.
This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Provide general electronic technical support to engineering, scientific, and technical staff to plan and conduct experiments at LLNL and other off-site locations and ensure operational readiness of Site 300 facilities.
- Design, fabricate, assemble, and disassemble moderately complex electronic components and systems, using work control process and procedure requirements.
- Operate electronic diagnostic equipment, maintain area controls, assist with electronic diagnostic calibration and alignment, test prior to experiment execution, and perform data recovery after experiment execution.
- Prepare and maintain systems documentation and experimental records.
- Perform facility related and technical functions such as maintenance, testing, upgrades to equipment control, and interlock systems checks.
- Ensure that support and experimental areas are kept clean, uncluttered, and in a state of readiness.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the 531.3 level
- Provide advanced technical assembly and disassembly support of complex weapons systems and author operational procedures and technical documents.
- Design, fabricate, assemble, and disassemble complex electronic components and systems including planning, equipment selection, and methods.
- Identify, analyze, and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex electronic problems using independent creativity and judgment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Associate degree in Electronics, Engineering Technology, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Intermediate knowledge and experience with electrical diagnostic equipment, maintaining area controls, assisting with electronic diagnostic calibration and alignment, testing prior to experiment execution, and performing data recovery after experiment execution.
- Ability to read and follow engineering notes, sketches, drawings, specifications, and procedures.
- Intermediate knowledge of engineering hardware design and testing processes.
- Experience in general fabrication processes with the ability to operate hand/power tools.
- Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively within large teams.
- Ability to become medically qualified to wear respiratory and other protective equipment and perform moderate work while wearing full-face or half-mask respirators, and ability to maintain required qualifications and certifications (i.e. Explosives Handler, Rad Worker (II), Beryllium Worker).
Additional qualifications, at the 531.3 level
- Significant related experience in electronic circuits, systems, theory, and design.
- Advanced technical skills and knowledge of engineering principles to solve complex problems using established guidelines, techniques, and procedures and the ability to interpret and execute complex assembly procedures from engineering notes, sketches, drawings, and other technical material.
- Ability to work effectively while handling multiple assignments concurrently.
- Effective written and verbal communication, feedback, and presentation skills sufficient to develop and report data, and to work successfully with a multidisciplinary team in a highly collaborative environment.
Qualifications We Desire
- Experience working with classified materials and experimental data and/or experience working with high explosives and initiation systems.
- Experience with high sample rate data acquisition and processing, including electrical and optical systems.
- Experience working with and/or around high-voltage and high-current equipment and experience with optical, radiographic, and electronic diagnostic equipment.
- Operational experience with LabVIEW code, Wonderware InTouch software, and Modicon Industrial Programmable Logic Controllers.
- Certified LLNL Explosives Handler or equivalent training for handling explosives.
Pay Range
$43.55 - $63.97 Hourly
$43.55 - $53.36 Hourly for the 531.2 level
$52.23 - $63.97 Hourly for the 531.3 level
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. Pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
