POSITION SUMMARY:
The Principal Electrical Engineer is a key technical leader who drives the design, development, testing, and delivery of innovative products and systems. In this highly visible role, you will work directly with customers to understand their challenges, translate requirements into impactful solutions, and help shape the future of our technology.
Combining technical expertise with strategic thinking, you will solve complex engineering problems, validate cutting-edge concepts, and provide leadership and mentorship to engineers and engineering technicians. You will collaborate with customers, stakeholders, and senior leaders-both within Advanced Energy and externally-to deliver exceptional results and advance mission-critical programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for the design and analysis of systems, products, and subsystems/circuits to specification, cost, budget, schedule, and quality goals.
  • Responsible to diagnose issues of diverse scope with design, field performance, reliability and test yields of products and recommend/implement corrective actions to address
  • Assume responsibility for the success of the product/system in the customers' applications and recommend/implement corrective actions as needed
  • Follow key engineering procedures in the Product Development Process and ECO process
  • Work with manufacturing locations and supply chain groups to implement cost reductions, manufacturability improvements, and quality improvements for existing products

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Location: Wilmington, MA
  • Environment: Works in a noisy, fast-paced power development lab and standard office environment
  • Flexibility working across time zones as part of a global team, as required
  • Uses electronic equipment and can work with high voltage
  • Domestic and international travel of up to 10%
  • Interfaces with internal and external customers
  • Onsite technical support at customer locations

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
  • Comprehensive knowledge of kV high-voltage design practices and engineering processes
  • Expert-level knowledge of power electronics design
  • AC/DC and DC/DC switched-mode power supply design
  • EMI/EMC design, analysis, and mitigation
  • Magnetic component design and optimization
  • Power component selection, including MOSFETs, GaN FETs, gate drivers, capacitors, and related devices
  • Feedback control analysis and control loop design
  • Discrete analog and digital circuit design
  • Embedded systems design using microcontrollers and/or FPGA architectures
  • PCB layout, stack-up design, and noise mitigation techniques
  • Proficiency with simulation tools such as PSIM, SIMPLIS, PLECS, or equivalent
  • Ability to perform statistical and mathematical analysis, including Kalman filtering and Gaussian denoising techniques
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and solve complex technical problems

Preferred
  • Experience with MATLAB, Mathcad, or similar engineering tools
  • Working knowledge of microcontroller and FPGA firmware development
  • Understanding of EtherCAT and industrial communication protocols
  • Experience with thermal design and thermal management techniques
  • Experience designing products for safety, regulatory compliance, and certification
  • Familiarity with IEC 61000, UL, and other applicable industry standards

EXPERIENCE:
  • 12+ years of electrical engineering experience, including high-voltage (kV) power systems and power electronics design
  • Experience with switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) and power electronics applications
  • Experience independently solving complex technical challenges and leading technical initiatives
  • Experience managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to engineers and engineering technicians
  • Experience influencing, negotiating, and driving solutions in complex technical environments
  • Hands-on laboratory, testing, debugging, and troubleshooting experience
  • Experience developing product specifications, verification plans, and test procedures
  • Experience with reliability and environmental testing, including HALT, HASS, and ALT methodologies
  • Experience with DFM (Design for Manufacturability), DFT (Design for Testability), and FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis)

EDUCATION:
  • B.S. in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field.

COMPENSATION:
As required by multiple state pay transparency laws, Advanced Energy provides a reasonable range of compensation for each job posting. Actual compensation is influenced by an array of factors including, but not limited to, skill set, level of experience, and specific office location. The range of starting pay for this role is $170,000 to $220,000 per year.
