What does an Electromagnetic Motor Design Engineer do?

An Electromagnetic Motor Design Engineer specializes in designing, developing, and testing electric motors that use electromagnetic principles for motion and power conversion. Their work involves creating detailed designs using CAD software, selecting materials, analyzing electromagnetic fields, and optimizing motor performance for efficiency and reliability. They often collaborate with other engineers to ensure the motor meets specific application requirements in industries like automotive, aerospace, or manufacturing. Additionally, they may troubleshoot issues, oversee prototype construction, and contribute to the advancement of motor technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electromagnetic Motor Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electromagnetic Motor Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, electromagnetic theory, and motor design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with simulation tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, MATLAB, and CAD software, as well as knowledge of relevant industry standards, is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills that enhance performance in this role. These skills and qualities are important because they ensure the development of efficient, reliable, and innovative motor systems for a variety of applications.

What are some common challenges faced by Electromagnetic Motor Design Engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Electromagnetic Motor Design Engineers often work closely with mechanical engineers, software developers, and manufacturing teams to ensure that motor designs meet performance, cost, and manufacturability requirements. A common challenge is balancing the ideal electromagnetic performance with practical constraints such as space, weight, and thermal limits imposed by other team members. Clear communication and early involvement in the design process help ensure alignment on requirements and trade-offs, leading to more efficient project outcomes and innovative solutions.

What is the difference between Electromagnetic Motor Design Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectromagnetic Motor Design EngineerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, specialized knowledge in electromagnetismBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering or related field

Job description

About Radiant
Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the world's first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The company's first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt, fail-safe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to 5 years without refueling. Portable nuclear power with rapid-deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Radiant's unique, practical approach to nuclear development leverages modern software engineering to rapidly deliver safe, factory-built microreactors that use existing, well-qualified materials. Founded in 2020, Radiant is on track to test its first reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory this summer, with initial customer deliveries beginning in 2028.
About the Role
Radiant is seeking a talented Senior Motor Design Engineer to design and develop an alternator for the nuclear-driven, high-speed power generator. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the design of active parts, and the structural and thermal analysis of high-speed generators. You will collaborate with engineers cross-functionally and partner closely with the Power Conversion and Electrical Systems team responsible for converting mechanical energy to electrical to be delivered to customers safely and reliably. The successful candidate will own active part design of generators, along with performing analysis, simulation, and component selection. You'll make a big impact in commercializing Earth's first mass-produced nuclear reactors and power remote areas and critical infrastructure with abundant clean energy.
Responsibilities & Duties:
  • Own design, development, and integration of high power alternator and primary loop motor for a nuclear power generator.
  • Apply electromagnetic design and testing for a closed-loop Brayton cycle and its electric motor/generator components.
  • Create 3D models and 2D fabrication drawings in CAD and NX.
  • Own communications with vendors to source all components to build the generator.
  • Perform bench testing, dynamic testing, and system testing for all subsystem components and models.
  • Perform hands-on assembly, rapid prototyping, and integration of high voltage electric motors and generators.

Required Qualifications & Skills:
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, or mechanical engineering specializing in power electronics.
  • 5+ years of design experience designing high-voltage and high-power electric motors and/or generators.
  • Fundamental knowledge of electric motors.
  • Expert in design of different types of permanent magnet motors in +1kV, +1MW applications with speeds +40krpm.

Desired Qualifications & Skills:
  • 8+ years of generator design.
  • M.S in Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering specializing in power electronics.
  • Knowledge of motor control systems including SVM.
  • Deep understanding of Power Electronics and interaction of electronics circuits with electromagnetics components.
  • Define and optimize generator requirements and update design to comply with system level limitations and specifications.
  • Great team player with one team mentality working with turbomachinery, power electronics, thermal, packaging and software teams.
