How much do electrolyzer stack engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 15, 2026, the average yearly pay for electrolyzer stack engineer in the United States is $134,771.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,000.00 and $158,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an electrolyzer stack engineer do?

An Electrolyzer Stack Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing the core components of electrolyzers, which are devices that use electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Their work involves selecting materials, designing stack architecture, testing prototypes, and improving performance and durability. Electrolyzer Stack Engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to scale up production, reduce costs, and ensure the stacks meet safety and efficiency standards for applications in green hydrogen production and renewable energy.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrolyzer stack engineer?

To thrive as an Electrolyzer Stack Engineer, you need a strong background in electrochemistry, materials science, and mechanical or chemical engineering, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools, and stack performance testing equipment is crucial, along with knowledge of industry standards and safety protocols. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for optimizing designs and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are vital to developing efficient, reliable electrolyzer stacks that advance hydrogen production technologies and meet industry demands.

What are some typical challenges electrolyzer stack engineers face when scaling up designs from prototype to mass production?

Electrolyzer Stack Engineers often encounter challenges related to material durability, manufacturing consistency, and system integration as they move from prototype to mass production. Ensuring that components such as membranes and catalysts perform reliably at scale requires close collaboration with materials scientists and production teams. Additionally, refining the stack design to optimize efficiency while reducing costs is an ongoing focus, and maintaining quality control during high-volume manufacturing can be demanding. Successful engineers proactively address these issues by implementing rigorous testing protocols and working collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

What is the difference between Electrolyzer Stack Engineer vs Electrolyzer System Engineer?

AspectElectrolyzer Stack EngineerElectrolyzer System Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in electrochemical systemsEngineering degree, certifications in renewable energy systems
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and development of electrolyzer stacks in labs or manufacturingSystem integration, operation, and troubleshooting of electrolyzer systems
Industry UsageFocused on stack components within hydrogen production facilitiesOversees entire electrolyzer systems in renewable energy plants

Electrolyzer Stack Engineers specialize in developing and testing electrolyzer stacks, focusing on component performance. In contrast, Electrolyzer System Engineers handle the overall system operation, integration, and maintenance. Both roles are essential in hydrogen production, but they differ in scope and responsibilities.
