Overview

E2 is seeking a Senior Engineer with an active California Professional Engineer license to serve as the Engineer of Record for a temporary hydrogen production and microgrid pilot project located in Oakland, California.

The project is a pilot project and will involve hydrogen generation for transportation applications and integration with a microgrid. The hydrogen generation system is anticipated to include a Teledyne electrolyzer powered by approximately 4,160-volt, three-phase electrical service.

The Engineer of Record will provide technical oversight throughout the demolition, site preparation, electrical interconnection, installation, startup, commissioning, and operational phases of the project.

The assignment is anticipated to begin in October 2026 and work may be performed primarily remotely, with periodic travel to the Oakland project site during key phases of execution.

Responsibilities
    Serve as the California-licensed Engineer of Record for the hydrogen production and microgrid installation.
  • Provide engineering oversight and technical direction throughout project design, installation, startup, and operations.
  • Review and approve engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, equipment data, and other technical deliverables.
  • Sign and seal engineering documents within the engineer's area of professional competence.
  • Oversee the demolition and removal of existing equipment and infrastructure, as applicable.
  • Review site preparation, grading, foundation, structural support, utility, and equipment installation requirements.
  • Review electrical interconnection requirements associated with the electrolyzer, microgrid, and 4,160-volt, three-phase electrical service.
  • Support the integration of hydrogen production equipment with electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, controls, and balance-of-plant systems.
  • Review equipment layouts, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, single-line diagrams, control narratives, and equipment specifications.
  • Evaluate compliance with applicable California codes, industry standards, permitting requirements, and Authority Having Jurisdiction requirements.
  • Coordinate with the project owner, equipment vendors, contractors, utilities, permitting agencies, and other project stakeholders.
  • Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, technical meetings, and project risk assessments.
  • Respond to requests for information and address field conditions or design changes encountered during construction.
  • Perform periodic site visits to observe construction progress and confirm general conformance with approved engineering documents.
  • Support system startup, testing, commissioning, and operational readiness activities.
  • Review testing procedures, commissioning documentation, equipment certifications, and final turnover packages.
  • Provide engineering support during the temporary two-year operational period.
  • Assist with documentation and engineering oversight related to the eventual decommissioning or removal of the temporary installation.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, structural or civil
  • Active and unrestricted California Professional Engineer license.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible engineering experience.
  • Prior experience serving as an Engineer of Record or engineer responsible in charge.
  • Experience with one or more of the following:
    • Hydrogen production or handling systems
    • Electrolyzers
    • Microgrids
    • Distributed energy resources
    • Medium-voltage electrical systems
    • Renewable energy installations
    • Industrial facilities
    • Transportation fueling infrastructure
  • Knowledge of applicable California building, electrical, fire, mechanical, and energy codes.
  • Familiarity with engineering requirements for hydrogen production, storage, ventilation, hazardous area classification, gas detection, emergency shutdown, and fire and life safety systems.
  • Ability to review multidisciplinary engineering documents and coordinate across electrical, mechanical, civil, structural, process, and controls disciplines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel periodically to Oakland, California for key milestones

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with California Energy Commission-funded projects.
  • Experience with Teledyne electrolyzer systems or similar hydrogen generation equipment.
  • Experience with 4,160-volt electrical systems and utility interconnections.
  • Experience with temporary demonstration or pilot facilities.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 2, NFPA 70, NFPA 55, California Fire Code requirements, and applicable hydrogen safety standards.
  • Experience supporting construction, startup, commissioning, and operations of energy or industrial facilities.

Wage Data Per State Requirements

The salary range for this position is $150,000 to $190,000 annually. The starting salary will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience, licensure, technical capabilities, and assigned responsibilities.
