What does an electrochemical battery test engineer do?

An Electrochemical Battery Test Engineer is responsible for designing, executing, and analyzing tests on batteries to assess their performance, safety, and reliability. They work with various battery chemistries, such as lithium-ion, and use specialized equipment to measure parameters like capacity, cycle life, and thermal stability. Their role is crucial in developing new battery technologies and ensuring products meet industry standards and regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrochemical battery test engineer?

To thrive as an Electrochemical Battery Test Engineer, you need a strong background in electrochemistry, materials science, and engineering principles, typically supported by a degree in chemical, electrical, or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with battery testing equipment, data acquisition systems, and analysis software such as MATLAB or LabVIEW, as well as experience with safety protocols and industry standards, is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate testing, reliable data interpretation, and safe, innovative development of battery technologies.

What are some common challenges faced by electrochemical battery test engineers during battery performance evaluation?

Electrochemical Battery Test Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing the complexity of test protocols to accurately simulate real-world usage and ensuring data integrity across long-term cycling tests. They must also troubleshoot unexpected cell failures, which can involve isolating variables like temperature, pressure, or electrical anomalies. Additionally, managing safety protocols when handling high-energy batteries is critical, as is maintaining clear communication with cross-functional teams, such as R&D and quality assurance, to interpret results and refine testing methodologies.

What is the difference between Electrochemical Battery Test Engineer vs Battery Development Engineer?

AspectElectrochemical Battery Test EngineerBattery Development Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrochemistry, electrical engineering, or related fields; certifications in battery testing are commonRequires similar degrees; often involves additional knowledge in materials science and design
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, testing facilities, and quality assurance settingsResearch labs, product development teams, and prototype testing environments
Industry UsagePrimarily focused on testing, validation, and quality control of batteriesInvolved in designing, developing, and improving battery technologies

While both roles require a background in electrochemistry and similar certifications, the Electrochemical Battery Test Engineer mainly focuses on testing and validation of batteries, ensuring quality and safety. In contrast, the Battery Development Engineer is involved in creating and improving battery designs, working on innovation and product development.

Job description

Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
The Amazon LEO Battery Test & Validation team develops and executes test solutions that ensure battery hardware meets performance, reliability, and mission requirements

Our team supports battery packs and battery electronics throughout development, qualification, and production, partnering closely with Battery, Electrical, Systems, Mechanical, Software, Reliability, Manufacturing, and Quality Engineering teams.
As a Battery Test Engineer, you will own battery pack and PCBA level testing from requirements through final test reporting. You will work cross functionally with engineering stakeholders to understand requirements, translate them into test objectives and pass/fail criteria, develop test plans and procedures, build or configure test setups, complete test readiness activities, execute testing, analyze results, and communicate findings.
This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong technical judgment, structured troubleshooting, and the ability to take ambiguous test needs and turn them into repeatable, well-documented test campaigns.
Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S

permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
Key job responsibilities
- Partner with Battery, Electrical, Systems, Mechanical, Software, Reliability, Manufacturing, and Quality teams to collect and understand test requirements.
- Translate product and subsystem requirements into test objectives, test cases, procedures, operating conditions, and measurable pass/fail criteria.
- Develop and maintain test plans for battery packs, PCBAs, battery management electronics, and associated electrical interfaces.
- Design, build, configure, and validate test setups using power supplies, electronic loads, battery cyclers, DAQs, oscilloscopes, DMMs, environmental chambers, and other laboratory equipment.
- Develop test fixtures, harnesses, instrumentation, and basic test automation as needed to support efficient and repeatable testing.
- Lead OK2Test and test readiness activities by confirming hardware configuration, test setup, instrumentation, software, procedures, safety controls, and data collection are ready before execution.
- Execute electrical, functional, performance, environmental, characterization, and reliability testing at the battery pack and PCBA levels.
- Monitor testing, identify abnormal behavior, troubleshoot test setup and hardware issues, and drive root cause investigations when failures occur.
- Analyze test data using engineering analysis tools and scripts to identify trends, anomalies, performance margins, and potential failure mechanisms.
- Clearly distinguish product failures from test equipment, instrumentation, software, or procedural issues.
- Document test results, deviations, failures, and engineering conclusions with strong data traceability.
- Generate final test reports summarizing test configuration, methodology, results, pass/fail assessment, anomalies, conclusions, and recommended next steps.
- Present results and technical findings to engineering stakeholders and support decisions on hardware readiness, design changes, and additional testing.
- Improve test methods, automation, data analysis, and laboratory processes to increase test quality, repeatability, and efficiency.
- Up to 20% travelling nationally and/or internationally
