Electrocatalysis information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrocatalysis Research Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrocatalysis Research Scientist, you need a solid background in chemistry, materials science, and electrochemistry, typically supported by an advanced degree such as a Ph.D. in a related field. Experience with laboratory techniques, electrochemical analysis tools (like potentiostats and spectroelectrochemical systems), and familiarity with data analysis software are crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively are important soft skills. These competencies are essential for designing innovative experiments, advancing research, and translating findings into practical applications in energy and environmental technologies.

What are some common challenges faced by electrocatalysis researchers when scaling laboratory findings to industrial applications?

A frequent challenge for electrocatalysis researchers is translating promising laboratory results into scalable, cost-effective industrial processes. Factors such as catalyst stability, reproducibility, and performance under real-world operating conditions often differ from small-scale experiments. Additionally, researchers must address issues related to catalyst material sourcing, large-scale synthesis, and integrating their systems with existing industrial infrastructure. Collaboration with engineers and industry partners is essential to overcome these hurdles and ensure successful technology transfer.

What is electrocatalysis?

Electrocatalysis is a field of chemistry focused on accelerating electrochemical reactions using catalysts. These catalysts, often made from metals or metal complexes, help increase the efficiency of processes such as fuel cells, water splitting, and carbon dioxide reduction. Electrocatalysis is crucial for developing clean energy technologies because it enables more efficient conversion of electrical energy to chemical energy and vice versa. Researchers in electrocatalysis work to design better catalysts that are more cost-effective, stable, and selective for specific reactions.

What is the difference between Electrocatalysis vs Electrochemical Technician?

AspectElectrocatalysisElectrochemical Technician
Required CredentialsAdvanced degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials scienceAssociate's or bachelor's degree in electrochemistry, chemistry, or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, university settings, industry R&DManufacturing plants, testing labs, maintenance facilities
Industry UsageResearch and development of catalysts for energy conversionOperation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrochemical equipment

Electrocatalysis focuses on developing catalysts to improve electrochemical reactions, often requiring advanced research skills. In contrast, electrochemical technicians handle the operation and maintenance of electrochemical systems in industrial settings. While both roles involve electrochemistry, electrocatalysis is more research-oriented, whereas electrochemical technicians are more hands-on with equipment.

Job description

The Chemistry Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in catalysis. The successful candidate will be working on synthesis , catalytic evaluation, and characterization to elucidate active sites and catalyst stability under reaction conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide mechanistic understanding of the catalytic behaviors observed under reaction conditions.
  • Correlate the composition/structure with the activity/stability of catalysts.
  • Design and develop heterogeneous catalysts
  • Coordinate collaborative research with experimental or theoretical collaborators.
  • Prepare and write manuscripts for publications in scientific journals and present research results in scientific conferences and DOE program review meetings.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD degree in physics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering, or closely related fields.
  • Strong background and research experience (including graduate research) in electrocatalysis.
  • Good English writing and oral skills for publications and presentations.
  • Hands-on experience in synthesis, testing and characterization of catalysts.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in heterogeneous catalysis.
  • Synthesis with controlled composition and morphology, catalytic evaluation and in-situ/operando characterization using synchrotron and neutron techniques.

Additional Information:

  • Initial 1-year term appointment subject to renewal for the second year based on performance and funding.
  • Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $82,000- $85,000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience.Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events.
  • Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment.
