Caterpillar's Electrification & Energy Solutions division (E+ES) is focused on advanced power systems development with emphasis on electrification to provide sustainable power solutions to our customers. The E+ES Chemitronics Team handles Battery Modelling, Simulation and Battery Management System (BMS) controls development and implementation for a wide range of battery chemistries

In this Battery Controls Engineering Specialist role you will be responsible for leading BMS controls software solutions for batteries, for a variety of Caterpillar applications including mobile construction and mining equipment, marine, rail, oil & gas, and stationary electric power. You will provide technical leadership that will shape the future of Caterpillar's advanced power systems product offerings. You will work with a team of engineers and be accountable for gathering and meeting the voice of the customer throughout development and integration of control strategies (requirements, design, simulation, integration and validation).
Accountability spans the full development cycle from concept to production implementation onto BMS controller. The position will collaborate with a global teams to solve technical problems and deliver on project goals, continually learn to stay abreast of innovative technology, and mentor team members. This role directly impacts Caterpillar's current and future electrified powertrain products
Job Duties/Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Define and document BMS control requirements; design and develop core and application software features based on product needs
  • Create common control features using model-based development for various electrification architectures.
  • Apply virtual product development (MIL/SIL simulations) for testing, optimization, and performance verification.
  • Develop, calibrate, and validate BMS control features in lab and application environments; Provide on-site support at proving grounds and customer locations as needed
  • Lead cross-functional engineering teams to implement robust BMS control strategies
  • Collaborate with customers and internal teams to understand software requirements and ensure (module/pack design/application) system integration and validation of control strategies
  • Protect Caterpillar's intellectual property and deliver cost- and time-effective technical solutions

What you have:
Degree Requirement Bachelors or master's degree in engineering (focus on control systems or mechatronics preferred) - BS in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering or related curriculum.
Technical Excellence: Industry experience developing controls software, performance or system validation related to control algorithms for complex systems.
Level Extensive Experience:
• Expertise in software validation methodologies i.e. HIL, SIL, lab, machine/vehicle
• MATLAB/Simulink (or similar) with embedded code exposure. Proficient with controls model design and Model Based System Engineering tools
• Knowledge of Direct-to-Flash methodology for creating experimental flash files
• Hands on experience with CAN Communication and use of CANape
• Knowledge and experience with Lithium-Ion batteries and/or BMS control strategies.
• Prior experience or coursework dealing with battery electric power systems preferred
• Prior experience with Battery systems simulation preferred
• Experience with application of AI/ML and other advanced controls techniques preferred

• Develops embedded system software using compilers, assemblers, and debuggers.
• Develops embedded systems' prototype to ensure it meets performance and security expectations.
• Ensures the hardware and software requirements are met while structuring an embedded system.
• Manages embedded systems ranging from low to high complexity with multiple units and networks.
• Utilizes various debugging tools to reduce the number of bugs in an embedded system.
Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.

Summary Pay Range:
$126,000.00 - $189,000.00
Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
