What is an electrician helper?

Electrician Helpers are entry-level workers who assist licensed electricians with various tasks on job sites. Their duties typically include carrying tools and materials, preparing and cleaning work areas, and helping install electrical wiring and equipment. While they do not perform complex electrical work themselves, they play a crucial support role by ensuring electricians can work efficiently and safely. This position is often a starting point for those interested in becoming fully qualified electricians, providing hands-on experience and exposure to the trade.

What does an electrician helper do?

Electrician helpers assist master electricians with the installation and maintenance of electrical power systems. The electrician helper performs supportive job duties so that the master electrician can focus on tasks requiring more experience and overall expertise. Daily job duties and responsibilities include examining electrical units for loose connections, measuring and cutting wires and conduits, and drilling holes for electrical hookups. They also supply tools to the master electrician, maintain a clean workspace, and power down and store electrical equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrician helper?

To thrive as an Electrician Helper, you need basic knowledge of electrical systems, safety protocols, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with hand tools, power tools, and sometimes OSHA safety certification is typically required. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication skills help you stand out in this role. These skills and qualities ensure safe, efficient support for electricians and contribute to successful project completion.

What are some common challenges electrician helpers face when starting out, and how can they overcome them?

New Electrician Helpers often encounter challenges such as learning to read blueprints, adapting to fast-paced job sites, and safely handling tools and materials. It's common to feel overwhelmed at first, but these challenges can be overcome by actively seeking guidance from experienced electricians, asking questions, and embracing hands-on learning opportunities. Staying organized, paying attention to safety protocols, and demonstrating a willingness to learn will help new helpers build confidence and quickly become valuable members of the team.

Job description

SoBro Construction — Hillsboro, OR

SoBro Construction is a non-union specialty contractor in the Pacific Northwest, with divisions in electrical contracting and wireless/low-voltage. We do commercial and industrial electrical work across Oregon and Washington.

We're hiring a Journeyman Electrician who wants more than a tools-only job. This is a field role first but we're looking for someone with the judgment and ambition to grow into field leadership: running crews, walking jobs with GCs, supporting estimates, and eventually helping lead the division. If you're a strong electrician who's been waiting for a shop small enough to actually notice, this is that role.

What you'll do

  • Perform and lead commercial and industrial electrical installation work
  • Run work from drawings and specs; keep quality and code compliance tight
  • Support and enforce jobsite safety practices (OSHA and state regulations)
  • Coordinate day-to-day with our project manager and project administrator on schedule, materials, and scope
  • Flag scope changes and field conditions early — you're our eyes on the job
  • Join job walks and site visits with GCs and clients as you grow into the role
  • Mentor apprentices and help build the crew around you

Who we're looking for

  • Oregon Journeyman Electrician license required (Washington a plus, or willingness to obtain reciprocity)
  • Solid commercial and/or industrial experience; strong on plans, specs, and code
  • Reliable and present — the field, the office, and clients can count on you during the work day
  • Good communicator: can talk to a GC, an inspector, and an apprentice in the same afternoon
  • Commercially aware: understands that hours, materials, and change orders are money, and works accordingly
  • Wants to grow — into foreman, superintendent, and beyond. We promote from within when the person's ready.

Compensation
Competitive hourly or salary based on experience and license level, plus license premiums for additional state certifications. Health benefits, paid holidays, and PTO. Clear path to increased responsibility and pay as you take on leadership.

The pay range for this role is:
45 - 80 USD per hour(HQ)
