Electrical engineers often collaborate closely with mechanical, software, and civil engineers on large projects. One common challenge is ensuring clear communication, as each discipline may use different terminology and design approaches. Electrical engineers must also coordinate timelines for component integration and resolve any conflicts in technical specifications. Developing flexibility and strong teamwork skills helps electrical engineers navigate these challenges and contribute effectively to successful project outcomes.

What are jobs in the electrical industry?

Jobs in the electrical industry vary from conducting the construction of wiring systems to performing maintenance for commercial, municipal, or residential areas. In this career, your job duties often include installing and wiring systems, reading blueprints or diagrams for circuits, and inspecting and identifying issues or defective parts. Electrical jobs range from wiremen and outside linemen to residential wiremen and installer technicians. However, most workers are simply called electricians. You can also become a renewable energy technician and work with alternative electricity systems.

Job description

Description:

Posting Summary:

A growing electrical contracting firm is seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Estimator to join a fast-paced, collaborative estimating department. The ideal candidate will bring advanced estimating expertise—particularly with design/build electrical projects—and a proactive, detail-driven approach to supporting pre-construction efforts.

Position Summary:

The Senior Electrical Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, comprehensive cost estimates and bid packages for electrical construction projects of varying size and complexity. This role requires strong analytical ability, industry knowledge, and the capacity to manage multiple estimates simultaneously.

You will collaborate closely with fellow estimators, project managers, suppliers, and prospective clients to develop high-quality proposals, early project viability assessments, and pre-construction cost analysis. This position also contributes to project handoff, post-project review, and overall continuous improvement efforts within the estimating department.

Essential Responsibilities:

· Review and interpret project specifications, drawings, and scope documents to determine labor, materials, and equipment requirements.

· Perform detailed quantity takeoffs using multiple estimating methodologies (comprehensive, historical, conceptual, and median approaches).

· Identify qualified suppliers and subcontractors; solicit and evaluate quotes for accuracy and alignment with project requirements.

· Prepare complete estimates and proposal documents, including inclusions, exclusions, and letters of clarification.

· Collaborate with Project Management and Operations teams to communicate estimate details and ensure a smooth transition from pre-construction to execution.

· Support project teams during construction by assisting with lighting package approvals, pricing updates, and development of change orders.

· Ensure timely and accurate completion of all assigned estimates and client-required documentation.

· Participate in pre- and post-project reviews to improve estimating accuracy and operational processes.

· Perform additional duties as required to support departmental and organizational goals.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, is preferred.

Requirements:

Qualifications & Preferred Experience

  • High school diploma required; additional specialized technical training strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Minimum 5 years of electrical estimating experience, or equivalent experience as a licensed journeyman electrician.
  • Design/build estimating experience is highly desirable and strongly prioritized.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively identify needs, solve problems, and drive tasks to completion.
