Job description

Electrical Project Engineer - Substation

Location: Greenwood Village, CO, US; Bloomington, MN, US; Chicago, IL, US

Role Overview

Electrical Project Engineer responsible for coordinating and leading substation projects up to 765kV, including detailed design, protection & control, physical design, quality review, budgeting, and client communication.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical guidance and project leadership for substation projects.
  • Develop protection and control design deliverables such as protective relays, panel arrangements, single‑line diagrams, schematics, and wiring.
  • Create physical design deliverables including yard layout, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, & auxiliary power systems.
  • Perform or oversee quality review of electrical substation design packages.
  • Mentor junior team members and prepare equipment specifications and BOMs.
  • Communicate and coordinate with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and stakeholders.
  • Present proposals, designs, and project activities to internal and external audiences.
  • Travel to client and vendor offices or project sites as needed.
  • Prepare and manage design budgets and schedules.
  • Support business development and pursuit activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • High voltage substation design experience – Physical and/or Protection & Controls.
  • Project lead and technical specialist experience for utility substation clients.
  • QA/QC review skills.
  • Strong communication with clients, multidisciplinary leads, and project managers.
  • Professional Engineer license.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience.
  • Ability to complete required pre‑employment onboarding (background check, drug screen, etc.).
Work Environment & Physical Demands

Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment, based on manager discretion, job performance, and work assignments.

Annual compensation ranges by state:

  • Colorado: 120,406–201,080
  • Illinois: 120,406–201,080
  • Minnesota: 114,933–191,940
