How much do electrical schematic designer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for electrical schematic designer in the United States is $39.19, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $31.49 and $44.95 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by Electrical Schematic Designers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Electrical Schematic Designers often work closely with mechanical engineers, PCB layout specialists, and manufacturing teams. A frequent challenge is ensuring that schematic designs accurately reflect the physical constraints and requirements provided by other departments. Miscommunication or incomplete information can lead to costly design revisions or delays. To overcome these challenges, designers benefit from strong communication skills, regular design reviews, and using collaborative design tools that allow for real-time feedback and updates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Schematic Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Schematic Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and technical drawing, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN, and familiarity with industry standards and documentation systems, is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are crucial for producing precise schematics that support efficient manufacturing, compliance, and safety.

What is the difference between Electrical Schematic Designer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectrical Schematic DesignerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related fieldBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, manufacturing plants, construction sitesDesign, testing, project management in offices, labs, or field sites
ResponsibilitiesCreating detailed electrical schematics and diagramsDesigning systems, analyzing performance, overseeing projects

Electrical Schematic Designers focus on creating detailed electrical diagrams, while Electrical Engineers have broader roles including system design and analysis. Both roles require technical skills, but Electrical Engineers often hold higher credentials and take on more complex project responsibilities.

What does an Electrical Schematic Designer do?

An Electrical Schematic Designer creates detailed diagrams that show how electrical systems and components are connected within a product or building. Their work involves interpreting technical information, using specialized software to produce schematics, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. These diagrams are essential for engineers, electricians, and manufacturers to correctly install, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical systems.

  • High-growth organization with advancement opportunities!
  • Diverse, Collaborative, & Fun Work Environment!

About the Role:

The Electrical Designer is responsible for creating and maintaining electrical drawing packages for low-voltage and medium-voltage power distribution equipment. This role supports the design and manufacture of switchgear, switchboards, and related assemblies through the development of accurate single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, panel and equipment layouts, and associated bills of materials (BOM).

This position requires strong electrical drafting and design skills, working knowledge of CAD tools used for schematics and electromechanical design, and the ability to convert customer requirements, internal standards, and engineering intent into clear manufacturing and customer-facing documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and revise single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, interconnection diagrams, wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings for power distribution equipment.
  • Develop complete drawing packages for manufacturing, quality, project management, and customer submittals based on project specifications, bills of material, and customer requirements.
  • Produce panel and equipment layouts that account for component spacing, accessibility, routing, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Use CAD tools such as SolidWorks Electrical Schematic, SolidWorks Electrical 3D, SOLIDWORKS PDM, or similar platforms to create, manage, and maintain electrical documentation, 3D routing models, and design data.
  • Route wires, cables, and harnesses in 3D environments when required to support physical layout, coordination, and build accuracy.
  • Create, maintain, and improve electrical symbols, manufacturer parts, and component libraries to support repeatable and standardized design output.
  • Develop and maintain standard drawing sets, templates, and design details for commonly used components and product configurations.
  • Interpret customer drawings, specifications, and electrical requirements and translate them into Maverick drawing standards and production-ready documentation.
  • Coordinate with engineering, project management, purchasing, quality, and manufacturing to resolve design questions, clarify requirements, and implement changes throughout the design and production process.
  • Support bill of material (BOM) development and validation to ensure alignment between ERP, schematics, layouts, and released manufacturing documents.
  • Manage design files and documentation within SOLIDWORKS PDM, including check-in/check-out practices, revision control, data card updates, workflow transition states, and release status management to support accurate data management and document control.
  • Work within applicable UL and industry requirements, including UL 891, UL 1558, and other relevant standards as required by product type.
  • Review drawings for completeness, consistency, and accuracy before release, and support redline incorporation and continuous improvement of design standards.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience creating electrical drawing packages for industrial control, power distribution, switchgear, switchboards, PDUs, panelboards, ATS/STS equipment, or similar engineered electrical assemblies.
  • Experience with at least one of the following or similar tools: SolidWorks Electrical 3D wire routing, AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, Autodesk Inventor Cable and Harness / Inventor Electrical, or comparable electromechanical electrical-design platforms.
  • Experience supporting drawing revisions, BOM development, and manufacturing change implementation in a production environment.
  • Experience with PDM, PLM, ERP, or similar data management tools, including file check-in/check-out, revision control, transition states, BOM data, and released drawing/document management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in electrical/electronic engineering technology or a related field from an accredited institution preferred; equivalent practical experience will be considered.
  • Experience designing or documenting low-voltage or medium-voltage power distribution equipment.
  • Experience creating or supporting 3D layouts of electrical equipment, components, panels, wiring, cable routing, or related electromechanical assemblies.
