How much do electrical schematic designer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for electrical schematic designer in the United States is $39.19, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $31.49 and $44.95 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by Electrical Schematic Designers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Electrical Schematic Designers often work closely with mechanical engineers, PCB layout specialists, and manufacturing teams. A frequent challenge is ensuring that schematic designs accurately reflect the physical constraints and requirements provided by other departments. Miscommunication or incomplete information can lead to costly design revisions or delays. To overcome these challenges, designers benefit from strong communication skills, regular design reviews, and using collaborative design tools that allow for real-time feedback and updates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Schematic Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Schematic Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and technical drawing, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN, and familiarity with industry standards and documentation systems, is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are crucial for producing precise schematics that support efficient manufacturing, compliance, and safety.

What is the difference between Electrical Schematic Designer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectrical Schematic DesignerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related fieldBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, manufacturing plants, construction sitesDesign, testing, project management in offices, labs, or field sites
ResponsibilitiesCreating detailed electrical schematics and diagramsDesigning systems, analyzing performance, overseeing projects

Electrical Schematic Designers focus on creating detailed electrical diagrams, while Electrical Engineers have broader roles including system design and analysis. Both roles require technical skills, but Electrical Engineers often hold higher credentials and take on more complex project responsibilities.

What does an Electrical Schematic Designer do?

An Electrical Schematic Designer creates detailed diagrams that show how electrical systems and components are connected within a product or building. Their work involves interpreting technical information, using specialized software to produce schematics, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. These diagrams are essential for engineers, electricians, and manufacturers to correctly install, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical systems.
