As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for electrical schematic designer in the United States is $39.19, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $31.49 and $44.95 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by Electrical Schematic Designers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Electrical Schematic Designers often work closely with mechanical engineers, PCB layout specialists, and manufacturing teams. A frequent challenge is ensuring that schematic designs accurately reflect the physical constraints and requirements provided by other departments. Miscommunication or incomplete information can lead to costly design revisions or delays. To overcome these challenges, designers benefit from strong communication skills, regular design reviews, and using collaborative design tools that allow for real-time feedback and updates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Schematic Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Schematic Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and technical drawing, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN, and familiarity with industry standards and documentation systems, is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are crucial for producing precise schematics that support efficient manufacturing, compliance, and safety.

What is the difference between Electrical Schematic Designer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectrical Schematic DesignerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related fieldBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, manufacturing plants, construction sitesDesign, testing, project management in offices, labs, or field sites
ResponsibilitiesCreating detailed electrical schematics and diagramsDesigning systems, analyzing performance, overseeing projects

Electrical Schematic Designers focus on creating detailed electrical diagrams, while Electrical Engineers have broader roles including system design and analysis. Both roles require technical skills, but Electrical Engineers often hold higher credentials and take on more complex project responsibilities.

What does an Electrical Schematic Designer do?

An Electrical Schematic Designer creates detailed diagrams that show how electrical systems and components are connected within a product or building. Their work involves interpreting technical information, using specialized software to produce schematics, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. These diagrams are essential for engineers, electricians, and manufacturers to correctly install, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical systems.

Job description

Electrical Designer – Industrial Automation

Up to $125,000 Base Salary • Green Bay, WI Area • Full Benefits Package

EXPERIENCE DEPTH: 2+ Years of Electrical Design Experience (or Technical Degree + 6 Months)

SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE: AutoCAD Electrical (Required), Autodesk Inventor & Vault (Preferred)

WORK SCHEDULE: 40-45 Hours per Week with Flexible Start Times (6:00 AM – 7:30 AM)

LOCATION POLICY: 100% On-Site (No Remote / No Travel)

If you are looking to escape the rigid, repetitive "rinse-and-repeat" product lines of standard high-volume manufacturing and want a role with true variety, this is your professional sanctuary. Operating as an agile, highly successful boutique automation partner with fewer than 20 employees, this debt-free integrator boasts an exceptional multi-decade history of stability, consistent organic growth, and an absolute track record of job security. The position opens due to a long-term team member transitioning into a completely different field, leaving an opening in a tight-knit, collaborative department where employee retention averages nearly 8 years and multiple professionals have spent over two decades building their careers.

What truly sets this organization apart is how heavily they reinvest in their staff's long-term financial future. You will have direct exposure to technical ownership and advanced design tools. Because all fabrication is handled right down the hall in a modern, specialized industrial panel shop, you will experience the excitement of custom, high-variety engineering with zero external travel required.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Develop electrical schematic designs and detailed control panel layouts tailored to custom, high-complexity industrial automation projects.
  • Select specialized electrical components and generate comprehensive Bills of Materials (BOMs) to support production teams.
  • Collaborate with automation engineers from initial concept design to final project sign-off, ensuring all client requirements are perfectly met.
  • Support advanced system integration initiatives including web handling, multi-axis coordinated servo motion, and robotics projects.
  • Partner with the shop floor throughout the assembly process to review schematics, troubleshoot design changes, and maximize hardware efficiency.

What We Are Looking For

  • Proven technical design background consisting of either 2+ years of dedicated electrical layout experience, or an Associate/Technical degree paired with at least 6 months of hands-on design.
  • Strong AutoCAD Electrical mastery as this stands as the core platform utilized daily for all schematic architecture.
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Inventor and Vault asset management software, which is highly preferred to hit the ground running.
  • Ability to interpret schematics accurately and conceptualize physical control panel layouts from raw engineering specifications.
  • Growth-oriented career mindset looking to scale long-term into advanced automation engineering or technical sales positions over time.
