Electrical Relocation information

What is electrical relocation?

Electrical relocation refers to the process of moving or altering the position of electrical systems, wiring, outlets, or equipment within a building or facility. This service is often needed during renovations, office moves, or when new equipment is installed that requires power in a different location. Electrical relocation ensures that all components are safely and efficiently repositioned while maintaining compliance with building codes and safety standards. Professional electricians handle this work to minimize downtime and prevent electrical hazards.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals in electrical relocation projects, and how can they be addressed?

Electrical relocation professionals often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple trades, ensuring compliance with safety codes, and minimizing downtime for affected operations. Successfully addressing these challenges requires strong communication skills, careful planning, and a thorough understanding of electrical systems and local regulations. Collaborating closely with project managers, engineers, and facility staff helps streamline the process, while staying updated on industry best practices ensures relocations are completed safely and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in electrical relocation, and why are they important?

To thrive in Electrical Relocation, you need strong knowledge of electrical systems, wiring codes, and safety standards, typically supported by an electrician's license or equivalent certification. Familiarity with circuit testing tools, blueprint reading, and project management software is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for coordinating with teams and clients. These abilities ensure electrical systems are safely and efficiently relocated, minimizing downtime and maintaining compliance with regulations.

What is the difference between Electrical Relocation vs Electrical Technician?

AspectElectrical RelocationElectrical Technician
CertificationsElectrical licenses, safety certificationsElectrical licenses, safety certifications
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, industrial facilitiesManufacturing plants, maintenance sites
Industry UsageSpecialized in relocating electrical systemsInstalling, maintaining electrical systems

Electrical Relocation focuses on moving existing electrical systems safely and efficiently, often during construction or renovation projects. Electrical Technicians install, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical systems. While both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, Electrical Relocation specializes in system transfer, whereas Electrical Technicians handle ongoing system operation and repair.

Job description

High Voltage Electrical Engineer - *Relocation to NC Required*

This role focuses on the design, development, and implementation of complex multi-phase high-voltage power systems, with an emphasis on 480V applications up to 400 amps. You will engineer and optimize systems that include wiring design and installation, variable frequency drives, generator sets, load banks, industrial process controllers, and switchgear. The position begins with continued development of reformer and reactor skid systems and their sub-systems, and will expand into motorsports-related projects such as ECU development, starters, alternators, and sensors. You will work across the full product lifecycle—from concept and design through prototyping, testing, and production—while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to integrate power electronics and controls into larger systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement high-voltage, multi-phase power electronic systems, particularly 480V systems up to 400 amps.
  • Engineer microgrid power management solutions involving generators and motors, including transitions between shore power supplies.
  • Develop and optimize wiring design, electrical schematics, and installation plans for complex power systems.
  • Oversee and perform hands-on installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of wiring and electrical system hardware.
  • Specify, integrate, and optimize variable frequency drives, generator sets, load banks, industrial process controllers, and switching gear.
  • Lead the continued development of reformer and reactor skid systems and associated sub-systems, including power and control architectures.
  • Support motorsports-related projects, including race engine mechatronic devices such as starters, alternators, sensors, and related electronics.
  • Apply instrumentation, control, and calibration techniques, including CAN communication, harness design and manufacturing, and power electronics synchronization strategies.
  • Implement and maintain CAN communication protocols and other relevant communication standards for measurement and control.
  • Use data acquisition systems to collect, analyze, and interpret test data for system validation and performance optimization.
  • Develop and refine synchronization strategies for multi-phase power systems and power electronics.
  • Contribute to and, when appropriate, lead or manage electronics and mechatronics projects from early design through prototyping, testing, and production.
  • Consult on facility-related power electronics and electrical issues on an as-needed basis.
  • Prepare clear technical documentation, including specifications, wiring and harness diagrams, test plans, and technical reports.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience in power electronics, electrical engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing high-voltage, multi-phase power electronic systems, including 480V systems up to approximately 400 amps.
  • Hands-on experience with wiring design, electrical system hardware installation, and troubleshooting in practical, real-world environments.
  • Experience with microgrid power management involving generators and motors, including transitioning between different power sources such as shore power.
  • Strong instrumentation, control, and calibration experience, including CAN communication, harness design and manufacturing, and power electronics synchronization.
  • Demonstrated experience with data acquisition systems and data analysis for testing and validation.
  • Ability to manage cradle-to-grave product development, from early design and prototyping through testing and into production.
  • 3D design experience using CAD tools; familiarity with Creo is preferred, though experience with other CAD packages is also valued.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to produce clear technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and participate effectively in cross-functional team environments.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and tackle new engineering challenges with enthusiasm and minimal oversight.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (such as Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or Mechatronics Engineering) is highly preferred, though strong relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Experience in high-power industries such as solar, energy, AC/DC power systems, power utilities, wind energy, hybrid-electric vehicles, or high-voltage.
