About ShermcoShermco is a leading provider of electrical testing, maintenance, commissioning, and repair services for utility, industrial, and commercial customers. Our teams support critical power infrastructure with a strong focus on safety, technical excellence, reliability, and customer service.

We are currently seeking a Utility Electrician to join our Manitoba field services team. This is a field-based role supporting electrical utility, industrial, and power distribution projects across Manitoba, Canada, and the United States.

Job SummaryThe Utility Electrician will be responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, and repairing electrical power systems and related equipment in field environments. This position supports customer sites, utility infrastructure, substations, industrial facilities, and power distribution systems.

This role requires regular travel of 30% or more, primarily throughout Manitoba and other Canadian provinces, with potential travel to the United States based on project and customer requirements.

The ideal candidate is a safety-focused Journeyperson Electrician with experience in utility, industrial, commercial, or field service environments. Experience with medium-voltage systems, transformers, switchgear, breakers, substations, grounding, and electrical testing is considered an asset.

Responsibilities
  • Install, inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair electrical power systems and utility equipment.
  • Work with low-voltage and medium-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Support maintenance, commissioning, testing, outage work, shutdowns, and emergency repair services.
  • Work on equipment such as transformers, switchgear, breakers, cables, panels, meters, grounding systems, and related electrical infrastructure.
  • Perform electrical terminations, cable pulling, conduit installation, grounding, equipment connections, and verification work.
  • Read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, and customer specifications.
  • Identify electrical deficiencies, equipment issues, safety concerns, and opportunities for corrective action.
  • Complete work documentation, service reports, inspection forms, test records, permits, and job-site paperwork accurately and on time.
  • Follow Shermco, customer, provincial, federal, and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Participate in job hazard assessments, tailgate meetings, safety planning, and job briefings.
  • Work collaboratively with supervisors, project managers, technicians, engineers, customers, and other trades.
  • Maintain company tools, equipment, vehicles, and materials in a safe and organized condition.
  • Travel regularly to field sites across Manitoba, other Canadian provinces, and the United States as required.
  • Work overtime, weekends, on-call rotations, shutdowns, outages, or emergency response assignments when required.
Qualifications
  • Valid Journeyperson Electrician certification recognized in Manitoba.
  • Previous experience in utility, industrial, commercial, construction, maintenance, or electrical field service work.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical codes, safe work practices, and electrical maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, single-line diagrams, and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical systems and power distribution equipment.
  • Valid driver's licence with a clean or acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel 30% or more for field assignments across Manitoba, Canada, and the United States.
  • Ability to meet applicable travel requirements for cross-border work assignments, including travel to the United States, where required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with utility distribution systems, substations, transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, relays, or protection and control systems.
  • Experience with medium-voltage electrical equipment and MV apparatus
  • Experience with electrical testing equipment such as multimeters, megohmmeters, high-potential testers, relay test sets, power quality meters, or related diagnostic tools.
  • Previous field service, commissioning, shutdown, maintenance, or outage-support experience.
  • Safety training such as First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Arc Flash, CSTS, or equivalent training.
  • Experience working around energized electrical equipment and following lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Experience supporting customer sites across multiple provinces or cross-border locations.
  • Strong customer-facing communication skills.

Travel Requirements

This position requires travel of 30% or more based on project needs, customer requirements, and business demands.

Travel may include:

  • Field assignments throughout Manitoba.
  • Travel to other Canadian provinces and territories.
  • Travel to the United States for project work, customer support, training, shutdowns, emergency response, or site-specific assignments.
  • Overnight stays, extended field assignments, and work away from home.
  • Overtime, weekends, rotating schedules, and short notice travel when required.

Candidates must be able to meet applicable cross-border travel requirements for U.S. assignments. Any U.S. travel will be managed in accordance with applicable immigration, employment, customer, and company requirements.

Working Conditions

This is a field-based position requiring frequent travel to customer sites. Work may be performed outdoors, in substations, industrial facilities, construction sites, utility environments, and customer locations.

The role may involve:

  • Working in all weather conditions.
  • Working around energized and de-energized electrical equipment.
  • Standing, walking, climbing, lifting, bending, kneeling, and working at heights.
  • Working in confined spaces or elevated work areas.
  • Use of personal protective equipment.
  • Travel exceeding 30% of scheduled work time.
  • Overnight travel and extended stays away from home.
  • Compliance with all Shermco, customer, site-specific, provincial, federal, and cross-border safety and access requirements.

Compensation and Benefits

Shermco offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package. Final compensation will be based on skills, experience, qualifications, certifications, and business requirements. Where applicable, wages, overtime, travel time, premiums, and related employment terms will be administered in accordance with Manitoba employment standards, applicable provincial legislation, company policy, and any applicable customer or project requirements.
