Black & McDonald is a respected leader in the high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) substation industry, specializing in the design, construction, and maintenance of HV and MV substations, transmission systems, and distribution lines up to 500kV. Committed to innovation, safety, and reliability, we are seeking an experienced Project Manager to join our Technical Services department in Ontario. Reporting directly to the Department Manager, Technical Services, this role encompasses the management of complex technical services projects across the department. These areas include substation commissioning, maintenance, and metering.

As a Project Manager within Black & McDonald Limited's Technical Services department, based in Ontario, you will oversee the seamless execution of HV and MV substation EPC projects. You'll lead the planning, coordination, and implementation of projects from inception to completion, ensuring they meet schedule, scope, quality, and safety benchmarks. You will also support with general departmental operations daily. Your strategic leadership and technical acumen will fortify our reputation as a trailblazer in the industry.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Holistic Planning: Collaborate with the Department Manager and cross-functional teams to define project goals, scope, and specifications. Formulate comprehensive project plans, covering timelines, budgets, resource assignments, and risk management strategies.
  • Resource Management: Efficiently allocate and manage project resources, spanning internal teams, subcontractors, and external collaborators. Optimize resource utilization for timely achievement of project milestones.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the primary liaison for clients, internal teams, and stakeholders. Maintain transparent communication, furnish regular project updates, and promptly address concerns to ensure alignment.
  • Risk Mitigation: Identify potential project risks and develop proactive mitigation strategies. Continuously assess and manage risks throughout the project lifecycle, implementing corrective measures when necessary.
  • Quality Assurance and Compliance: Ensure adherence to industry standards, regulations, and quality protocols. Implement rigorous quality control measures to uphold superior workmanship and safety.
  • Budgetary Oversight: Manage project budgets, monitor expenditures, and enforce cost control measures. Devise strategies to optimize financial performance while delivering exceptional outcomes.
  • Timely Execution: Monitor project schedules and milestones to ensure punctual delivery. Proactively identify deviations and implement corrective actions to restore alignment.
  • Change Management: Navigate changes in project scope, schedule, and budget judiciously. Evaluate change requests, gauge their impact, and collaborate with stakeholders to make informed decisions.
  • Team Leadership and Development: Lead and inspire cross-functional project teams, offering clear direction, mentorship, and support. Foster a collaborative work environment conducive to individual growth.
  • Commissioning and Handover: Oversee commissioning and testing to ensure successful project completion. Facilitate the transfer of all required documentation and training to clients before final handover.

WHAT YOU CAN OFFER

  • Bachelor's degree or advanced diploma in Electrical Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management or a related field.
  • 3-8 years as a Project Manager or Operations Manager in a related field.
  • Experience in the power utility landscape is considered an asset.
  • Experience in high voltage and medium voltage substations is considered an asset.
  • Experience in residential and commercial metering is considered an asset.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong knowledge of HV and MV substation, transmission, and distribution line systems, encompassing equipment, design standards, and regulations
  • Strong knowledge of residential and commercial metering.
  • Profound understanding of project management methodologies, tools, and practices
  • Track record of consistently delivering complex EPC projects on schedule and within budget
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in project management software and tools
  • Preferred designation as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng) with the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or OACETT certified as a Certified Technician (C. Tech) or Certified Technologist (C.E.T).
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is considered an asset.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as required.

The expected salary range for this role is between $75,000 - $100,000 per year. The starting salary will be determined based on several factors such as the successful candidate's qualifications, including but not limited to education and experience. Base pay is one component of Black & McDonald's total rewards package. Total rewards vary by position and may include additional offerings such as group insurance benefits, pension plan, annual discretionary bonus, career development programs, and other HR programs.
