What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Machines Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Machines Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, machine design, and power systems, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like MATLAB/Simulink, CAD software, and industry standards (such as IEC or IEEE) is essential, and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) can be beneficial. Problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you stand out when working on complex projects or collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring safe, efficient, and innovative design, operation, and maintenance of electrical machines in various industries.

What common challenges do engineers face when working with electrical machines in an industrial setting?

Engineers working with electrical machines in industrial environments often encounter challenges such as maintaining high efficiency under varying load conditions, troubleshooting unexpected machine failures, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Additionally, integrating new technologies or retrofitting older machines can be complex, requiring thorough understanding of both legacy systems and modern automation tools. Effective teamwork with maintenance technicians, controls engineers, and production managers is essential to address these challenges and minimize downtime.

What are electrical machines?

Electrical machines are devices that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, mechanical energy into electrical energy, or alter the characteristics of electrical energy. Common types include motors, which convert electrical energy to mechanical movement, and generators, which do the opposite. Transformers are another category, used to change voltage levels in power transmission. Electrical machines are integral to power generation, industrial operations, transportation, and household appliances.

What is the difference between Electrical Machines vs Electrical Equipment Technicians?

AspectElectrical MachinesElectrical Equipment Technicians
CredentialsDiploma or degree in electrical engineering, certifications in motor or generator maintenanceTechnical diploma or certification in electrical systems, troubleshooting skills
Work EnvironmentFactories, power plants, manufacturing facilitiesIndustrial sites, maintenance workshops, construction sites
Industry UsageDesign, operation, and maintenance of motors, generators, transformersRepair, troubleshooting, and installation of electrical equipment and systems

Electrical Machines professionals focus on the design, operation, and maintenance of large electrical devices like motors and generators, often working in industrial environments. Electrical Equipment Technicians handle the repair and troubleshooting of various electrical systems and equipment. While both roles require electrical knowledge and certifications, their daily tasks and work settings differ significantly.

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compilerโ„ข technology. This full-stack technology enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing for the many device classes frustrated by semiconductor methods and to open up entirely new product classes. The Matter Compilerโ„ข technology fully realizes the digital manufacturing dream: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device-one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compilerโ„ข technology-that we will be unveiling to the world soon.
Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.
About the Role
We are looking for a well-rounded, experienced electrical engineer who enjoys working in an agile environment. We expect our engineers to be self-motivated, willing and capable of making decisions based on incomplete information, and to have a get-it-done attitude.
The main line of work will be to build and integrate machine control systems for our custom manufacturing nodes. Our system is built around a multiprocessor architecture with distinct processors handling networking, general machine control, and specialty controls like vision and motion. Interconnect selection, prototype cabling, and bring-up firmware are also important aspects of the job.
We emphasize modularity for reuse to speed up subsequent builds of nodes with similar needs.
What You'll Do:
  • Participate in system architecture definition and drive electrical architecture
  • Design and build custom electronics for our automated manufacturing systems
  • Integrate third-party electronics
  • Support the building of engineering fixtures
  • Create and maintain component and module libraries for reuse
  • Generate manufacturing data and interact with vendors
  • Work closely with embedded systems, software, and mechanical engineering teams

What You'll Need:
  • 3+ years of experience as an Electrical Engineer
  • Maker mentality, being hands-on to quickly build, integrate, and test proof of concepts
  • Schematic entry, layout, and library management (Altium Designer preferred)
  • Excellent bring-up and debugging skills
  • Ability to write bring-up code for processors in C/C++ and test scripts in Python
  • Strong background in mixed-signal circuit design
  • Power electronics design and bring-up experience
  • Familiarity with a range of sensors and actuators
  • SPICE simulation knowledge
  • SMD soldering skills, familiarity with test and measurement equipment
  • Good working knowledge of signal integrity, EMI, and ESD handling
  • Cable harness design
  • Good documentation habits
  • A first-principles mindset-questioning assumptions, reframing problems from the ground up, and approaching challenges with foundational understanding rather than relying solely on precedent.
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or related field

Bonus Points For:
  • Motor control experience
  • Flex PCB design
  • Industrial power distribution experience
  • High reliability design
  • FPGA skills
  • Having worked with contract manufacturers
  • Expertise in FMEA

The compensation for this position also includes equity and benefits.
Salary Range
$165,000-$205,000 USD
