How much do electrical field engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for electrical field engineer in the United States is $72,687.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $63,000.00 and $83,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical field engineer?

To thrive as an Electrical Field Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and often an EIT or PE certification. Familiarity with CAD software, PLC programming, electrical testing tools, and industry-specific safety standards is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability are vital soft skills for success in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, efficient project execution and collaboration with diverse teams in dynamic field environments.

What are some common challenges electrical field engineers face when working on-site, and how can they be addressed?

Electrical Field Engineers often encounter challenges such as unexpected site conditions, tight project deadlines, and coordinating with multiple teams (like construction crews and project managers). These challenges can be managed by maintaining clear communication, conducting thorough site assessments before work begins, and staying adaptable to evolving project requirements. Building strong relationships with on-site personnel and being proactive in problem-solving are also key to successfully navigating these complexities.

What is the difference between Electrical Field Engineer vs Electrical Technician?

AspectElectrical Field EngineerElectrical Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in electrical engineering, certifications like PE or EIT often preferredAssociate degree or diploma in electrical technology, relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentOn-site at construction sites, power plants, or industrial facilities, overseeing projectsMaintenance, installation, and troubleshooting in similar environments
Job FocusDesign, project management, technical oversightInstallation, repair, routine maintenance

Electrical Field Engineers typically handle project design and oversight, requiring higher-level engineering credentials. Electrical Technicians focus on hands-on installation and maintenance tasks. Both roles work in similar environments but differ in responsibilities and required qualifications.

What does an electrical field engineer do?

An electrical field engineer is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems and equipment on-site. They often work outdoors or at construction sites, using tools like multimeters and test equipment, and may need certifications such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Their role ensures electrical systems operate safely and efficiently in real-world environments.

Job description

Join Axia Electric, a Shimmick subsidiary, as an Electrical Field Engineer and play a key role in delivering complex electrical and process control systems for some of Northern California's most critical infrastructure projects.

At Axia Electric, we are problem solvers. Creative thinkers. Innovators. Our clients include municipalities, water districts, sanitation districts, transit agencies, private developers, DOTs, and USACE.

Axia Electric, headquartered in Riverside, California, focuses on large public owners in several states, across water resources, water treatment, transportation and transit markets. Over the past decade, the division has grown tremendously, securing major projects, including the $350 million North City Pure Water Facility in San Diego and  the $235 million EVMWD Regional Water Reclamation Facility Expansion Project in Lake Elsinore, CA.
