What are some common challenges faced by new electrical engineering professors when balancing teaching and research responsibilities?
What does an electrical engineering professor do?
What is the difference between Electrical Engineering Professor vs Electrical Engineer?
| Aspect | Electrical Engineering Professor | Electrical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering or related field | Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering |
| Work Environment | Universities, research institutions, academia | Industry settings, offices, labs, manufacturing plants |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Higher education institutions, research organizations | Technology companies, power utilities, manufacturing firms |
Electrical Engineering Professors primarily focus on teaching and research within academia, requiring advanced degrees like a Ph.D. and working in universities. Electrical Engineers work in industry, applying engineering principles to design, develop, and maintain electrical systems, typically holding a bachelor's or master's degree. Both roles share foundational knowledge but differ significantly in work environment and responsibilities.

Job description
We seek an outstanding researcher and educator whose work applies robotics to address critical challenges in medicine and human health. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, surgical robotics, rehabilitation robotics, assistive robotics, autonomous systems for healthcare, medical device robotics, AI-enabled robotic systems, human-robot interaction in clinical environments, and robotics for diagnosis, intervention, or patient care. The successful candidate will maintain a cutting-edge, externally funded research program, teach and mentor graduate and medical students, and engage in interdisciplinary collaborations at the intersection of engineering and medicine.
About the School of Engineering Medicine:
The School of Engineering Medicine is a pioneer in translational medicine and research. Currently, SEM houses the EnMed medical educational program ( enmed.tamu.edu ), an innovative program that represents a partnership among the Texas A&M College of Engineering (COE), Texas A&M Vashisht College of Medicine (VCOM), and Houston Methodist Hospital (HMH). Each of these partners has an outstanding national ranking and offers state-of-the-art facilities for education and research. In addition, TAMU, SEM, and HMH provide excellent support for innovation and entrepreneurship. Students applying to the EnMed program must have an undergraduate degree in an engineering or computer science discipline and meet the prerequisites required by VCOM and COE. EnMed is the nation's only program to award both a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and a Master of Engineering in Innovation in Medicine degree within four years.
About the Location:
This position is based in the Discovery Tower, adjacent to the Texas Medical Center (TMC) in Houston. The TMC, the largest medical center in the world, hosts 21 hospitals and 8 specialty institutions, including the largest pediatric and cancer hospitals. The TMC ecosystem is also a global hub for medical technology innovation, featuring numerous startups, incubators, accelerators, and research institutions.
Position Responsibilities:
- Maintain a high-impact, externally funded research program in the field of robotics to solve challenges in human health.
- Teach courses to medical and graduate students.
- Mentor graduate students and medical students in research and innovation.
- Collaborate with engineering EnMed faculty and successfully integrate engineering with medicine in their research and teaching.
- Collaborate with clinicians, industry partners, and multidisciplinary teams to translate research into practice.
- Contribute to the department and profession through service activities.
Preference will be given to candidates with a strong interest in collaborative research with engineers and clinicians and a demonstrated ability to bridge the gap between engineering and medicine.
Qualifications
Required:
- Medical Degree (MD) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in robotics or a closely related field (to include, but not limited to, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science). Equivalent clinical candidates (MD) with a strong record of robotics innovation, translation, and deployment in clinical settings are also strongly encouraged to apply.
- A strong record of impactful research with evidence of external funding.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with engineers, clinicians, industrial partners, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated interest in translational or clinically relevant robotics research
