How much do electrical engineering apprenticeship jobs pay per year?
What is an electrical engineering apprenticeship?
What kinds of hands-on projects or tasks can I expect during an electrical engineering apprenticeship?
What are the qualifications to get an electrical engineering apprenticeship?
The primary qualifications for getting an electrical engineering apprenticeship include being close to graduation with an electrical engineering degree—most companies will consider applicants both before and after graduation—and having some experience. Many electrical engineering apprentices gain some industry experience through internships at electrical engineering firms or other companies that have electrical engineers on staff. Employers do not expect you to have professional experience before applying for this job; apprenticeships are long-term entry-level roles designed to supplement your skills, and having too much experience may disqualify you from this role. Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of an electrical engineering apprenticeship requires communication skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineering apprentice, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship vs Electrical Technician?
| Aspect | Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship | Electrical Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires high school diploma or equivalent; some programs may require technical coursework | Usually requires an associate degree or technical certification in electrical technology |
| Work Environment | On-the-job training, often in industrial, construction, or manufacturing settings | Hands-on electrical system installation, maintenance, and repair in various industries |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Used by employers to train future electrical engineers; industry includes construction, manufacturing, utilities | Employers hire electrical technicians for maintenance, troubleshooting, and system installation |
The Electrical Engineering Apprenticeship focuses on training individuals to become electrical engineers through practical experience, while Electrical Technicians perform hands-on electrical work with technical certifications. Both roles are vital in the electrical industry but differ in training depth and job responsibilities.

Whether you're transitioning from active duty or continuing to serve in the National Guard or Reserve, our Military Pathways Technical Engineer Apprenticeship Program provides an opportunity to apply the discipline, technical aptitude, and mission-focused mindset you've developed through military service to a rewarding civilian career.
Technical Engineers play a critical role in keeping Fiserv's 24/7 production operations running. Our teams maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and improve the sophisticated equipment responsible for producing and delivering critical financial communications and payment solutions for clients across the country.
Through hands-on training, mentorship, and career development opportunities, you'll build the skills needed to diagnose, repair, maintain, and improve complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, and automated production systems, including equipment components, assemblies, and production tooling.
We're looking for mechanically inclined individuals who enjoy understanding how things work. Successful candidates may have experience working on vehicles, generators, aircraft, communications equipment, production machinery, automation systems, electronics, HVAC systems, or other technical equipment.
What you will do:
- Learn to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and improve complex production equipment in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Perform preventive maintenance and equipment inspections to maximize reliability and minimize downtime in a 24/7 production operation.
- Diagnose equipment issues and perform repairs using troubleshooting techniques, diagnostic tools, technical manuals, schematics, and electrical diagrams.
- Disassemble, repair, modify, fabricate, and replace mechanical, electrical, and electronic components, fixtures, and tooling to support equipment performance and reliability.
- Partner with experienced Technical Engineers to develop expertise across multiple production technologies and maintenance disciplines.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, equipment reliability, and operational performance.
What you will need to have:
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent military experience.
- Recently separated from military service or actively serving in the National Guard or Reserve.
- Demonstrated mechanical, electrical, or technical aptitude through military experience, civilian work, education, certifications, hands-on hobbies, or personal projects.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills with a desire to learn.
- Experience using computers, hand tools, and basic power tools.
- Willingness to pursue additional training, certifications, or education as part of career development.
What would be great to have:
- Experience maintaining, repairing, or troubleshooting vehicles, machinery, production equipment, automation systems, electronics, communications systems, generators, or other technical equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, or blueprints.
- Military, educational, or professional experience related to maintenance, engineering, electronics, industrial maintenance, mechatronics, automation, or manufacturing operations.
- Experience using precision measurement tools, interpreting blueprints or technical drawings, or supporting equipment builds, fabrication, or assembly projects.
- Experience supporting mission-critical operations where equipment reliability and uptime are essential.
Work Environment
Our production facilities operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, supporting clients across the country. Opportunities may be available across 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, with the majority of openings supporting 2nd and 3rd shift operations.
