Electrical Engineer 2 – Grid Visualization & Analytics

Location- Birmingham, AL

Hybrid Schedule (In-office minimum 3 days/week – 12 days/month)

3–6 years of related experience

Contract- 3 Years

Position Overview

The Electrical Engineer 2 will support the Schatz Grid Visualization and Analytics Center (SGVAC) within Southern Company's Research & Development organization. This role focuses on advancing grid operations, planning, and situational awareness technologies for Transmission and Distribution systems.

The engineer will support—and over time lead—projects evaluating emerging grid technologies, with a strong emphasis on power system modeling, simulation, analytics, and visualization. This role is ideal for a technically strong engineer with research aptitude and hands-on power systems experience.

Key Areas of Focus

  • Power system modeling and simulation (including digital twins)
  • Grid operations and planning research
  • Synchrophasor technologies
  • Data analytics and visualization
  • Cybersecurity testing for grid applications
  • DERMS platform evaluation
  • Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) with hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Next-generation control center technologies

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and contribute to research projects focused on grid operations and planning
  • Develop research plans to evaluate new and emerging grid technologies
  • Perform power system analysis, modeling, and simulation studies
  • Apply data analytics and visualization techniques to power system problems
  • Document assumptions, methodologies, and results clearly and accurately
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for internal and external audiences
  • Manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary research teams
  • Travel overnight occasionally (limited)

Education Requirements

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (Required)
  • Specialization in Power Systems (Preferred)

Technical Skills & Qualifications

  • Proficiency in power system modeling and simulation tools such as:
    • RTDS
    • PSCAD
    • PSS®E
  • Experience or training in computer programming (Python, C#, SQL preferred)
  • Experience or training in data science and analytics preferred
  • Knowledge of databases, data structures, and computer networking is a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
