Electrical Engineer Research Assistant information

What does an electrical engineer research assistant do?

An Electrical Engineer Research Assistant supports research projects in the field of electrical engineering by assisting with experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and maintaining laboratory equipment. They often help design prototypes, prepare technical reports, and collaborate with senior engineers and researchers. Their work is crucial for advancing new technologies and contributing to scientific discoveries in areas such as electronics, power systems, and communications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer research assistant?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer Research Assistant, you need a solid background in electrical engineering fundamentals, laboratory techniques, and data analysis, usually supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with simulation tools (like MATLAB or SPICE), programming languages, and laboratory equipment is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you stand out in this role. These competencies ensure accurate research outcomes, efficient project execution, and productive collaboration within research teams.

What are some common challenges faced by electrical engineer research assistants during project development?

Electrical Engineer Research Assistants often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex circuit designs, adapting to rapidly changing project requirements, and balancing multiple tasks under tight deadlines. They may also need to quickly learn new software or laboratory equipment and ensure accurate data collection for experimental results. Collaborating effectively with senior engineers, researchers, and interdisciplinary teams is essential to overcoming these challenges and ensuring project success.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Research Assistant vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectrical Engineer Research AssistantElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field; some roles may prefer or require a master's degreeBachelor's degree in electrical engineering; professional licensure (PE) may be required for certain roles
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academic institutions, or corporate R&D departmentsDesign, develop, test electrical systems; manufacturing or field sites
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research institutions, tech companiesManufacturers, utility companies, consulting firms

The main difference is that Electrical Engineer Research Assistants focus on supporting research projects, often in academic or R&D settings, while Electrical Engineers are involved in designing and implementing electrical systems in various industries. Research assistants typically work under supervision, whereas electrical engineers take on more independent responsibilities in project development and execution.

Job description

LRS Federal is a Service-Disabled Veteran Owned company that provides construction management, design engineering, and environmental services to government customers. Our goal is to deliver customer-focused quality solutions in a diverse, dynamic environment where every employee has an opportunity for professional growth and career satisfaction.

As part of our efforts to provide exceptional service, LRS Federal is seeking to hire an Electrical Engineer(s) to assist our federal government client in managing the quality program of multiple construction and design projects (MEP related) taking place in either Tuskegee OR Montgomery, AL. This position will directly support the Department of Veterans Affairs campuses.

Qualifications

Nice to have qaulifications

  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in electrical engineering (with the ability to obtain reciprocity in additional states as required).
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-10 years of progressive experience working explicitly on Federal/DoD infrastructure and facility projects.
  • Active Design Footprint: Proven track record of actually performing physical electrical design work within recent roles (producing calculations, single-line diagrams, layouts, and specifications; not just reviewing the work of junior staff).
  • Federal Standards Expertise: Deep, practical mastery of Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA standards, and federal sustainable design mandates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Hands-on Electrical Design: Personally execute and oversee the production of comprehensive electrical design packages (Concept through 100% / Issued for Construction) for federal facilities, including medium-voltage distribution, interior power, lighting, grounding, lightning protection, and emergency/standby power systems.
  • Engineering Calculations: Perform and seal critical engineering calculations including short-circuit analysis, overcurrent protective device coordination, arc flash studies (using SKM or ETAP software), and voltage drop calculations.
  • Design-Build Support: Act as the lead corporate electrical technical authority on major Federal Design-Build (DB) and Design-Bid-Build (DBB) proposals and executed contracts.
  • Quality Assurance & Mentorship: Provide rigorous independent technical reviews (QA/QC) for multi-discipline federal design projects while mentoring mid-level and junior electrical designers.
  • Client Interfacing: Serve as the technical point of contact during design review conferences with DoD engineering components (e.g., USACE, NAVFAC) and civil agencies.

Technical & Professional Skills

  • Expert-level proficiency in electrical engineering design software (e.g., SKM PowerTools, ETAP, AGi32).
  • Advanced production capabilities in AutoCAD and Revit MEP for generating construction documents.
  • Thorough understanding of physical security, visual/auditory signaling, and telecommunications infrastructure integration within federal footprints.
  • Excellent written communication skills for authoring design narratives, basis-of-design (BOD) documents, and physical condition assessment reports.
