What does an electrical engineer research assistant do?

An Electrical Engineer Research Assistant supports research projects in the field of electrical engineering by assisting with experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and maintaining laboratory equipment. They often help design prototypes, prepare technical reports, and collaborate with senior engineers and researchers. Their work is crucial for advancing new technologies and contributing to scientific discoveries in areas such as electronics, power systems, and communications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer research assistant?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer Research Assistant, you need a solid background in electrical engineering fundamentals, laboratory techniques, and data analysis, usually supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with simulation tools (like MATLAB or SPICE), programming languages, and laboratory equipment is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you stand out in this role. These competencies ensure accurate research outcomes, efficient project execution, and productive collaboration within research teams.

What are some common challenges faced by electrical engineer research assistants during project development?

Electrical Engineer Research Assistants often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex circuit designs, adapting to rapidly changing project requirements, and balancing multiple tasks under tight deadlines. They may also need to quickly learn new software or laboratory equipment and ensure accurate data collection for experimental results. Collaborating effectively with senior engineers, researchers, and interdisciplinary teams is essential to overcoming these challenges and ensuring project success.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Research Assistant vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectElectrical Engineer Research AssistantElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field; some roles may prefer or require a master's degreeBachelor's degree in electrical engineering; professional licensure (PE) may be required for certain roles
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academic institutions, or corporate R&D departmentsDesign, develop, test electrical systems; manufacturing or field sites
Employer & Industry UsageUniversities, research institutions, tech companiesManufacturers, utility companies, consulting firms

The main difference is that Electrical Engineer Research Assistants focus on supporting research projects, often in academic or R&D settings, while Electrical Engineers are involved in designing and implementing electrical systems in various industries. Research assistants typically work under supervision, whereas electrical engineers take on more independent responsibilities in project development and execution.

Job description

DESE Research, Inc. is seeking a talented, motivated, and enthusiastic Electrical Engineer to join a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) systems. This role focuses on electrical design and analysis activities supporting complex defense systems, including schematic capture, PCB design, circuit simulation, laboratory testing, and specialty engineering analyses. If you are passionate about electrical engineering and want to apply your skills to mission-critical systems supporting the U.S. warfighter, we want to hear from you!

Job Details:

The candidate will work as part of an engineering team supporting the design, analysis, integration, and evaluation of electrical systems and components for GMD applications. The role includes performing electrical engineering activities such as schematic capture, printed circuit board (PCB) design, circuit simulation, and laboratory testing, as well as supporting specialty analyses such as Sneak Circuit Analysis (SCA), Worst-Case Circuit Analysis (WCCA), and electrical stress analysis.

A successful candidate will possess strong electrical engineering fundamentals, be comfortable working with laboratory test equipment and engineering analysis tools, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams. The position also supports the development and maintenance of Element Specialty Engineering Plans and analyses associated with the GMD Element Digital Model.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform electrical engineering design, development, analysis, and test activities in support of complex defense systems.
  • Develop and review electrical schematics using schematic capture tools.
  • Support printed circuit board (PCB) design and associated engineering activities.
  • Perform circuit modeling and simulation to evaluate electrical system and component performance.
  • Use laboratory test equipment to evaluate, troubleshoot, and verify electrical designs.
  • Support grounding and shielding analysis for electrical and electronic systems.
  • Analyze data and communication protocols associated with system interfaces.
  • Develop and review technical drawings and electrical engineering documentation.
  • Support the development, management, and verification of electrical requirements.
  • Perform or support HyperLynx signal integrity analysis.
  • Perform or support Worst-Case Circuit Analysis (WCCA).
  • Perform or support Electrical Stress Analysis.
  • Perform or support Sneak Circuit Analysis (SCA).
  • Ensure electrical designs and analyses comply with applicable standards and requirements.
  • Support planning, coordination, execution, delivery, and maintenance of Element Specialty Engineering Plans.
  • Support engineering analyses associated with GMD element configurations and the GMD Element Digital Model.
  • Document analysis results and communicate technical findings to engineering teams and program stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with electrical or electronic system design and analysis.
  • Experience with schematic capture.
  • Experience with PCB design.
  • Experience using laboratory test equipment.
  • Experience performing circuit simulation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain high-quality engineering documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience performing grounding and shielding analysis.
  • Knowledge of data and communication protocols.
  • Experience developing and reviewing technical drawings.
  • Experience with electrical requirements engineering.
