Electrical Engineer Project Manager information

What does an electrical engineer project manager do?

An Electrical Engineer Project Manager oversees electrical engineering projects from conception to completion. They coordinate teams, manage budgets and schedules, ensure compliance with safety standards, and serve as a liaison between clients and technical staff. Their role combines technical electrical engineering expertise with strong project management skills to deliver successful outcomes on time and within budget.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer project manager?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer Project Manager, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, project management methodologies, and typically a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering along with a PMP certification. Familiarity with project management software (like MS Project or Primavera), electrical design tools (such as AutoCAD or ETAP), and industry standards is crucial. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills enable effective team coordination and stakeholder management. These competencies ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required technical specifications, which is critical for organizational success.

What are some common challenges faced by electrical engineer project managers during large-scale projects?

Electrical Engineer Project Managers often encounter challenges such as coordinating multidisciplinary teams, managing project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. They must also effectively communicate with stakeholders, address unexpected technical issues, and balance project budgets. Developing strong organizational and leadership skills is essential for navigating these complexities and delivering successful projects.

Job description

Electrical Engineering Project Lead

Toronto, Ontario | Hybrid | $85,000+ (Based on Experience)

Electrical Engineer | Electrical Project Lead | EIT | Electrical Designer | Building Systems Engineer

Are you an Electrical Engineer or Designer looking for the opportunity to take on more ownership, greater project responsibility, and continued career growth?

TalentSphere is proud to be partnered with a well-established and award-winning consulting engineering firm in Toronto that is looking to add an Electrical Engineering Project Lead to its growing team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an electrical professional with 3–8 years of Canadian building consulting experience who wants to take the next step in their career while working alongside experienced senior engineers and being supported by a collaborative, technically strong team.

You'll have the opportunity to work on high-profile and diverse building projects, take ownership of projects from design through construction, interact directly with clients and consultants, and continue developing your technical and project leadership capabilities.

The firm has built a strong reputation within the industry, with a stable project pipeline, low employee turnover, and a culture that emphasizes mentorship, flexibility, technical excellence, and long-term career development.

What You'll Be Doing
As an Electrical Engineering Project Lead, you'll play an important role in delivering projects from initial concept through construction.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the electrical engineering and design components of building projects.
  • Take ownership of project delivery, including design, coordination, documentation, and construction administration.
  • Work closely with architects, mechanical engineers, structural engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Participate in project management, contract administration, site visits, and field reviews.
  • Build strong relationships with clients and serve as a trusted technical resource throughout project delivery.
  • Participate in business development initiatives alongside Associates and senior leadership.
  • Assist with fee proposals, project scopes, and client presentations.
  • Assess existing electrical systems and prepare condition assessment reports.
  • Provide technical advisory services and engineering recommendations to clients.
  • Design and coordinate electrical building systems including:
    • Power distribution
    • Lighting
    • Emergency power
    • Fire alarm
    • Low-voltage systems
    • Building electrical infrastructure
  • Prepare electrical load calculations and engineering analysis.
  • Prepare detailed design drawings, specifications, tender packages, and technical reports.
  • Review shop drawings and provide technical support throughout construction.
  • Participate in internal technical reviews and quality assurance processes.
  • Continue developing your technical and project leadership capabilities with mentorship from experienced senior engineers.

What You'll Bring
We're looking for someone who has a strong foundation in building electrical systems and is ready to take on increasing responsibility.

Ideally, you will have:

  • 3–8 years of professional experience in electrical engineering/design within the Canadian building consulting industry.
  • Experience with building electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems.
  • EIT or P.Eng. designation in Ontario, or eligibility for registration.
  • Electrical Designers with strong consulting experience will also be considered.
  • Experience preparing detailed design drawings and tender packages.
  • Exposure to feasibility studies, budget estimates, shop drawing reviews, commissioning, and/or condition assessments.
  • Strong understanding of building construction and electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and Ontario Building Code (OBC).
  • Strong communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively while taking ownership of your responsibilities.
  • An interest in continuing to develop toward project leadership and senior-level responsibilities.

The Projects
One of the biggest advantages of this opportunity is the variety of work. You'll have the opportunity to contribute to projects across the built environment, including:
Commercial | Institutional | Healthcare | Mixed-Use | Retail | Recreational | Residential

You'll gain exposure to different project types, clients, consultants, and technical challenges rather than being limited to one particular sector.

Why You'll Want to Consider This Opportunity

Work With Experienced Engineers
You'll have the opportunity to work closely with experienced senior engineers and technical leaders who are invested in mentorship and helping the next generation of engineers develop.

Take Ownership
This isn't a role where you'll simply be handed a set of drawings and asked to complete them.

You'll have opportunities to lead projects, communicate directly with clients, participate in site meetings, and take ownership of project outcomes.

Build Your Career
The firm places a strong emphasis on professional development and continuing education, creating opportunities to progress technically and professionally.

Work on Notable Projects
You'll have the opportunity to contribute to award-winning and technically interesting projects across Toronto and the broader GTA.

Flexibility Without Losing Collaboration
The firm offers a hybrid work environment, providing flexibility while maintaining a collaborative team culture.

Join a Stable, Established Firm
You'll be joining an organization with a strong reputation in the consulting engineering industry, an established project portfolio, and strong employee retention and tenure.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Starting at $85,000+ (based on experience)
  • Competitive benefits package
  • Performance bonus
  • Flexible working environment
  • Continuing education and professional development
  • Mentorship from senior engineers and leadership
  • Professional growth and advancement opportunities
  • Exposure to award-winning projects
  • Collaborative and supportive team environment

Ready for Your Next Step?
If you're an Electrical Engineer or Designer who is ready to move beyond simply producing designs and wants to lead projects, work directly with clients, learn from experienced engineers, and build toward the next stage of your career, this could be an excellent opportunity. I'd be happy to provide more information and have a confidential conversation about the role.
