Job description

What Vista Does

Vista Projects is an integrated engineering firm who has been solving complex challenges in the energy industry since 1985. We are innovators at our core. We continually find better, smarter ways to design and deliver oil and gas projects, and we are proud to be contributing on some of the most exciting low-carbon and synthetic fuel developments in the North America. For our people, that means meaningful, varied work and a real chance to shape how modern engineering gets done.
We are innovators in the energy industry. We actively find ways to improve how oil and gas projects are designed and delivered, and we are contributing to some remarkable low-carbon and synthetic fuel developments; including electro sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) and gas-to-liquids (GTL) projects. We are headquartered in Calgary and maintain a satellite office in Houston.

Why We Do It

The world needs energy, and better engineering makes the projects that deliver it safer, more efficient and more sustainable. Our multi-discipline teams have designed some of the most challenging and successful projects in the North American energy sector, from early-stage studies and pilots to large-scale commercial expansions. We take pride in doing that work well, and just as much pride in continuously improving how we do it.

What You Would Do in This Role

Reporting to the discipline lead, the senior engineer will participate in the design of different aspects of oil and gas projects from inception to completion. Duties will include:

  • Participating in the design of component parts and individual units
  • Exercising cost control, and reviewing and monitoring designs for conformance with control estimates and project specifications
  • Supervising the various activities involved in the Electrical design of a project consisting of several complex process units
  • Providing comprehensive engineering and design services by establishing design criteria and preparing specifications, design computations, drawings, models and bills of material in accordance with basic project requirements
  • Performing detailed calculations
  • Interfacing with client representatives;
  • Reviewing and maintaining project schedules, and tracking engineering tasks and deliverables in conjunction with project management
  • Reviewing vendor or subcontractor quotations, drawings, and specifications for technical adequacy and conformance with project requirements
  • Assigning and outlining work for others, and reviewing work for technical accuracy and adequacy
  • Making recommendations concerning the selection, training, appraisal and discipline of staff
  • Reviewing the work of others
  • Providing technical guidance to junior staff
  • Preparing or assisting in the preparation of discipline inputs for cost estimates for proposals
  • Applying advanced engineering techniques and analyses to complex engineering tasks
  • Preparing engineering work packages and providing construction support
  • Being able to meet safety requirements to attend site visits
  • Performing other duties as requested
Requirements
  • At least seven (7) years of progressive experience in facilities engineering and design in the oil and gas industry
  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in engineering or applied science
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team including process, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation and piping engineers and designers
  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of applicable codes and industry standards
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Self-motivated and efficient in time management and organizational skills
  • Registration as P.Eng. with APEGA
  • Apply strong working knowledge of oil facility related drawing packages, SLDs, area classifications, electrical layouts, JB wiring diagrams, motor and VFD schematics, cable schedules and EHT isometrics
  • Independently prepare or review ETAP or SKM models
  • Apply knowledge of CEC and international codes, standards and approved codes of practice
  • Prepare and review demand load calculations, voltage drop calculations, cable tray fill calculations, EHT calculations, etc.
  • Apply experience with the requisition of electrical equipment such as motors, switchgears, MCC, VFDs, UPS, EHT panels and e-houses
  • Prepare EIC engineering work packages
Preferred
  • Ten (10) years or more of experience as a fully qualified engineer, with five (5) or more years of experience in thermal heavy oil
