What is an electrical engineer internship?

An Electrical Engineer Internship is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of electrical engineering. Interns typically work under the supervision of experienced engineers, assisting with projects such as designing circuits, testing equipment, and analyzing data. The internship provides hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to real-world engineering challenges, helping interns develop technical skills and professional connections. Most internships last a few months and may be paid or unpaid, depending on the employer. Completing an internship can improve job prospects after graduation.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during an electrical engineer internship?

As an Electrical Engineer Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects such as assisting with circuit design, performing testing and troubleshooting of electronic components, and supporting the preparation of technical documentation. Interns often work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to gain hands-on experience in both hardware and software aspects of electrical engineering. This collaborative environment helps you build practical skills, learn industry standards, and understand the workflow of real-world engineering projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer Intern, you should have a solid understanding of electrical circuits, engineering principles, and be actively pursuing a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, circuit simulation tools, and basic programming languages is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and solve complex problems. These skills are essential for contributing to real-world engineering projects and gaining valuable industry experience.

How to get an internship as an electrical engineer?

To secure an electrical engineer internship, candidates should have a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles, relevant coursework, and proficiency with tools like MATLAB or AutoCAD. Applying through university career centers, online job portals, and networking with industry professionals can increase chances, and some internships may require prior project experience or certifications such as OSHA safety training.

Which internship is best for electrical engineer students?

The best internship for electrical engineering students typically involves hands-on experience in circuit design, power systems, or embedded systems, often with companies in manufacturing, energy, or technology sectors. Internships that offer exposure to industry-standard tools like MATLAB, AutoCAD, or PLC programming and provide mentorship can enhance skills and improve job prospects after graduation.

Job description

SubsidiarySteel DynamicsOverview

What Does Steel Dynamics Do?

Steel Dynamics is a leading industrial metals solutions company that produces lower-carbon, high-quality steel products primarily from recycled scrap. Operating through a circular manufacturing model, the company manufactures a wide range of steel products including flat roll, structural, and long products for industries such as construction, automotive, energy, and manufacturing. In addition to steel production, Steel Dynamics operates metals recycling facilities, steel fabrication plants, and aluminum production operations, serving customers across North America with a focus on innovation, efficiency, and sustainability.

What Makes This Internship Different?

Steel Dynamics' electrical engineering internships stand out from those at other companies because they offer a true balance of office-based engineering work and hands-on industrial experience. Interns are not limited to observing from a distance, they actively work alongside operators and maintenance teams on the production floor, applying engineering principles directly to equipment, systems, and processes. This approach allows interns to design solutions, test them in real-world conditions, and see the immediate impact of their work.

Internship Location

This internship is located at the Steel Dynamics Flat Roll Division located in Sinton, TX, in the Casting Department. This internship will take place in Summer 2027.

Internship Benefits

About Steel Dynamics

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Steel Dynamics is one of the largest and most diversified domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in the United States, with an estimated steelmaking and coating capacity of approximately 13 million tons, and facilities located throughout the United States and in Mexico. We operate using a circular manufacturing model, producing lower-carbon-emission, quality steel using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology with recycled ferrous scrap as the primary input. Our circular economy is powered by our three primary operating platforms: steel, metals recycling, and steel fabrication. Our steel operations produce steel products, including hot roll, cold roll, and coated sheet steel, structural steel beams and shapes, rail, engineered special-bar-quality steel, cold finished steel, merchant bar products, and specialty steel sections. Our metals recycling operations collect and process ferrous and nonferrous scrap from manufacturing and end-of-life items, such as automobiles, appliances, and machinery. This processed scrap is then sold to end-users for reuse, including our EAF steel mills, which produce new steel from the scrapped material. We sell a meaningful amount of steel to our own steel fabrication operations that in turn produce and sell structural steel joist and deck building systems to consumers.
