Job description

Overview

Austal USA leads the design and construction of advanced naval and commercial vessels, including Littoral Combat Ships and Expeditionary Fast Transports.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert judgement and analysis for design, development, and implementation of engineering products and shipboard systems.
  • Troubleshoot and solve highly complex technical issues, communicating resolutions to management.
  • Perform complex system calculations, specification trace packages, detailed engineering reports, and system drawings.
  • Check designs and drawings for accuracy and adherence to contract requirements.
  • Facilitate training, mentoring, and development of other engineers.
  • Establish relationships with engineers, other departments, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure project completion on time and to specifications.
  • Comply with company procedures, policies, and safety regulations.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience in the shipbuilding industry (or 12+ years overall engineering experience).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field from an accredited university.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with ability to train and mentor employees.
  • Ability to work independently with limited guidance.
  • Understanding of scheduling and adherence to strict deadlines.
  • Experience interacting with multiple engineering disciplines, production, design teams, customer representatives, and equipment manufacturers.
  • Experience reviewing contract requirements, performing detailed specification traces, developing technical trade‑off studies, and engineering cost analyses.
  • Computer literacy, familiar with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
  • Electrical Engineer: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, expert knowledge of power distribution, motor controllers, VFDs, lighting and communication systems.
  • Experience managing electric plant load analysis, short‑circuit analysis, voltage‑drop, and breaker‑coordination studies.
  • Knowledge of IEEE, ABS, IEC, SOLAS, Military Specifications, NEC, and maritime regulatory authorities.
