Job description

Contract Electronics Manufacturing & Test Technologist

Location: Calgary, Alberta
Employment Type: Contract
Initial Term: 4–6 months, with potential for extension
Start Date: ASAP

About the Role

We are seeking a hands-on Electronics Manufacturing & Test Technologist to support the assembly, testing, integration, and qualification of a high precision scientific instrumentation product.

This is a highly practical role for someone who enjoys working directly with sophisticated electronic equipment. You will be involved in building electronics sub-assemblies, installing and wiring circuit boards, fabricating cable harnesses, performing board-level testing, troubleshooting electrical issues, and integrating complete systems.

The product is well established, but some manufacturing documentation and processes are still being refined. The successful candidate will therefore need to be comfortable working from engineering drawings, schematics, assembly instructions, and test procedures while also recognizing and communicating gaps or inconsistencies in the documentation.

This position is particularly well suited to an Electronics Technologist, Electrical Technologist, Electronics Technician, Manufacturing/Test Technician, or hands-on Electrical/Electronics Engineer who enjoys practical work and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

Electronics Assembly & Integration

  • Assemble complex electronic and electrical sub-assemblies.
  • Install PCBs, electrical components, connectors, and wiring into mechanical assemblies.
  • Build and integrate cable and wire harnesses.
  • Cut, strip, crimp, terminate, label, and route wires and cables.
  • Perform soldering and electrical rework as required.
  • Follow engineering drawings, schematics, bills of materials, and assembly procedures.
  • Identify and communicate discrepancies between documentation and the physical product.
  • Assist with developing and improving assembly procedures and work instructions.

Testing & Troubleshooting

  • Perform board-level and subassembly electrical testing.
  • Use laboratory test equipment including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal generators, and other electronic instrumentation.
  • Diagnose wiring, assembly, and electrical faults.
  • Verify assemblies against defined electrical and functional acceptance criteria.
  • Record test results and document failures or deviations.
  • Assist engineering personnel with troubleshooting more complex issues.

Manufacturing Process Development

  • Help establish repeatable manufacturing and test processes for the product.
  • Identify documentation, tooling, fixture, and process gaps.
  • Develop practical improvements to assembly and test procedures.
  • Capture useful photographs, measurements, and observations for manufacturing documentation.
  • Provide feedback to engineering on design features that create manufacturing or test difficulties.

Engineering & Qualification Support

As production requirements permit, the successful candidate may also support:

  • Engineering validation and design verification testing (DVT).
  • EMC/emissions testing and preparation of equipment for external testing.
  • Prototype and engineering builds.
  • Test fixture development.
  • Electrical troubleshooting and characterization.
  • Other electronics manufacturing and engineering initiatives.

Qualifications

Required

  • Hands-on experience assembling, testing, or troubleshooting electronic equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Comfortable working with electronic test equipment.
  • Experience with electrical connectors, wiring, crimping, and cable assembly.
  • Strong attention to detail and workmanship.
  • Ability to follow technical procedures while recognizing when documentation does not match the physical product.
  • Comfortable working independently on complex equipment.

Preferred

  • Diploma or degree in Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with complex scientific, industrial, RF, medical, aerospace, or telecommunications electronics.
  • Experience with RF electronics or instrumentation.
  • Soldering and PCB rework experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting electronics to the board or component level.
  • Experience with manufacturing documentation or work-instruction development.
  • Experience with EMC/EMI testing.
  • Experience with engineering validation or design verification testing.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate is someone who likes to build things and figure out why they don't work.

You may be a technologist or technician with years of experience working on sophisticated electronics, or an engineer who prefers hands-on technical work to a purely design-oriented role. Either background can be successful.

The ability to work carefully and methodically, troubleshoot problems independently, and communicate clearly with engineering and manufacturing teams is more important than having a particular job title or academic background.

Contract Opportunity

This is an initial 4–6 month contract supporting a significant manufacturing and product qualification effort, with the possibility of extension depending on project requirements.

The role provides an opportunity to work directly with sophisticated scientific instrumentation while gaining exposure to electronics manufacturing, system integration, testing, qualification, and engineering development.

Compensation: Competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience and qualifications.
