How much do electrical engineer circuit design jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 2, 2026, the average yearly pay for electrical engineer circuit design in the United States is $111,091.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $83,000.00 and $132,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the difference between Electrical Engineer Circuit Design vs Electrical Engineer Power Systems?

AspectElectrical Engineer Circuit DesignElectrical Engineer Power Systems
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, possibly PE licenseBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, possibly PE license
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, office settings, CAD softwareSubstations, power plants, grid management
Industry UsageConsumer electronics, embedded systems, circuit boardsUtilities, renewable energy, transmission networks

Electrical Engineer Circuit Design focuses on creating and testing electronic circuits and systems, often in product development. Electrical Engineer Power Systems specializes in designing and maintaining electrical power grids and infrastructure. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in work environment and industry focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineer in Circuit Design, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer in Circuit Design, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit theory, and a relevant degree such as a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard design tools like SPICE simulations, PCB layout software (e.g., Altium Designer, Eagle), and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) can be highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These capabilities ensure precise, efficient, and innovative circuit solutions that meet technical requirements and industry standards.

What does an Electrical Engineer specializing in circuit design do?

An Electrical Engineer specializing in circuit design is responsible for creating, testing, and refining electronic circuits that are used in a wide range of devices and systems. They use tools like CAD software to design circuits, select appropriate components, and ensure their designs meet performance and safety standards. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, troubleshooting issues, and making sure the final product functions as intended. Circuit design engineers play a key role in developing new technologies across industries such as telecommunications, automotive, consumer electronics, and more.

What are some typical challenges electrical engineers face when designing complex circuits in a collaborative team environment?

Electrical engineers working on circuit design often encounter challenges such as integrating multiple design requirements from various team members—including mechanical, firmware, and test engineers—while maintaining optimal performance and reliability. Balancing trade-offs between cost, component availability, and design constraints can also be demanding, especially under tight project deadlines. Effective communication and documentation are essential to ensure all stakeholders are aligned and to avoid costly design revisions. Embracing collaborative tools and regular design reviews can help mitigate these challenges and promote successful project outcomes.

Job description

We have an outstanding Contract position for a Circuit Design Engineer to join a leading Company located in the Orlando, FL surrounding area.

**US Citizenship is required.**
**Candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.**

As the Senior Circuit Design Engineer, you will own the end-to-end design of the CCA, translating system requirements into reliable, production-ready circuit cards that power, communicate with, and integrate into the launcher's subsystems. You will work hand in hand with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers, perform verification and validation, and ensure every design meets rigorous power conditioning, signal integrity, and environmental standards.

Responsibilities:
  • Defining performance, power, and interface requirements for the CCA and documenting them in clear, traceable specifications.
  • Creating schematic capture, PCB layout, and bill of materials (BOM) using industry standard tools (e.g., Altium, Cadence).
  • Conducting simulation, signal integrity, and power analysis studies to validate design choices early in the development cycle.
  • Building and testing prototype hardware in the lab, troubleshooting issues, and iterating designs to meet V&V milestones.
  • Coordinating with mechanical and systems teams to ensure seamless integration with launcher subsystems and compliance with SWaP C constraints.
  • Preparing and delivering technical briefings, design reviews, and status updates for senior engineering, program management, and customers.
  • Managing configuration control, documentation, and change requests in the PLM system to maintain a robust, audit-ready design history.
  • Supporting environmental qualification (vibration, shock, thermal, radiation) and analyzing results to drive design improvements.

Basic Hiring Criteria:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related STEM field from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in circuit design engineering or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience with circuit card design, integration, and test for one or more of the following: digital electronics, power electronics, analog/mixed-signal, or FPGA-based processor boards.
  • Experience with Siemens Xpedition Enterprise or equivalent for schematic capture.
  • Experience with Cadence PSpice or equivalent for circuit simulation and analysis.
  • Experience with signal integrity tools such as Mentor Graphics Hyperlynx or equivalent.
  • Experience with developing and refining system, performance, interface, and environmental requirements for circuit card designs.
  • Must be a US Citizen; must possess or be able to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with MFC circuit card design processes and the Design Assurance process.
  • Experience with military standards and specifications, including MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-704.
  • Experience with Xilinx/AMD FPGA families (UltraScale, Versal).
  • High-speed design experience, including PCIe, Gigabit Ethernet, SERDES, or DDR4/5 memory interfaces.
  • MATLAB experience for analysis and simulation.
  • Experience with MOSA (Modular Open Systems Architecture) and WOSA (Weapon Open Systems Architecture).
  • Experience with CAMEO or equivalent requirements management tools.
  • Experience with rigid-flex circuit card design.
  • Experience with environmental qualification testing (vibration, shock, thermal, radiation).
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills.
  • Active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance.

Military connected talent encouraged to apply.
