What does an Electrical Draftsperson do?

An Electrical Draftsperson creates detailed technical drawings and plans for electrical systems in buildings, machinery, or infrastructure projects. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce precise layouts and schematics based on engineers' and architects' specifications. Their work ensures that electrical installations are safe, efficient, and compliant with relevant codes and standards. Electrical Draftspersons often collaborate closely with engineers, project managers, and construction teams throughout the design and implementation process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Draftsperson, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Draftsperson, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, technical drawing, and typically a diploma or certificate in drafting or electrical engineering. Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD or Revit and familiarity with relevant standards and codes are essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help ensure accuracy and effective teamwork. These skills are crucial for producing precise electrical plans that meet safety and regulatory requirements in construction and engineering projects.

What are some typical challenges faced by Electrical Draftspersons when working on multidisciplinary engineering projects?

Electrical Draftspersons often collaborate closely with civil, mechanical, and architectural teams, which can present challenges in coordinating design changes and ensuring documentation accuracy across disciplines. Managing multiple versions of plans, adhering to varying standards, and clearly communicating technical requirements are common hurdles. Proactive communication and strong organizational skills are essential to ensure that electrical layouts integrate seamlessly with the overall project, minimizing delays and costly rework.

Job description

OverviewJoin Moonshot's engineering team as an Electrical Controls Drafter, where you'll play a critical role in producing high-quality electrical schematics and documentation for UL-listed power distribution equipment. This position is primarily focused on electrical drafting using SOLIDWORKS Electrical, supporting UL508A, UL891 assemblies and control circuits integrated into switchboards and power systems. You'll work closely with controls engineers, electrical engineers, and manufacturing engineers to ensure drawings are accurate, compliant, and aligned with Moonshot's evolving design standards.ย Key Responsibilities
  1. Electrical Controls Drafting:
Create, modify, and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and related documentation using SOLIDWORKS Electrical for control panels and power distribution equipment.
  2. Engineering Collaboration:
Work closely with electrical engineers, controls engineers, and manufacturing engineers to translate design intent into complete, accurate, and buildable electrical documentation.
  3. Drawing Quality & Consistency:
Ensure electrical drawings meet internal expectations for clarity, accuracy, organization, and revision control across all projects.
  4. Standards Development & Ownership:
Actively contribute to the development, refinement, and maintenance of internal drafting standards, symbol libraries, templates, and best practices within SOLIDWORKS Electrical.
  5. Continuous Improvement:
Identify opportunities to improve drafting workflows, documentation quality, and tool usage to support efficiency, consistency, and scalability.
  6. Design Intent & Technical Understanding:
Apply practical electrical and controls knowledge to understand the purpose behind designs, enabling informed drafting decisions and constructive technical input during reviews.
Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience drafting electrical schematics using SOLIDWORKS Electrical 2D or 3D.
  • Background or hands-on experience with electrical control panels or power distribution equipment.
  • Familiarity with UL508A requirements or UL-listed panel designs.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, one-lines, and control logic.
  • Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent practical experience in electrical drafting or control circuits.
