What is an EIT (Engineer-in-Training)?

An EIT, or Engineer-in-Training, is an individual who has completed the educational requirements for becoming a professional engineer and has passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. The EIT designation is a step toward obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) license and is often required for entry-level engineering positions. EITs work under the supervision of licensed engineers and gain practical experience needed to qualify for the PE exam in the future.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EIT, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), you need a solid background in engineering fundamentals, typically demonstrated by an accredited engineering degree and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Familiarity with industry-specific software such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, or project management tools is often required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills set exceptional EITs apart. These competencies ensure accurate technical work, effective project collaboration, and readiness for eventual licensure as a Professional Engineer.

What are some common challenges EITs face when transitioning from academic studies to a professional engineering environment?

EITs often encounter challenges such as adapting to project timelines, understanding industry-specific standards, and effectively communicating technical ideas to non-engineering colleagues. The shift from academic projects to real-world engineering tasks frequently requires learning new software tools and adhering to safety or regulatory guidelines. Additionally, EITs must balance the desire to contribute ideas with the need to listen and learn from more experienced team members. Proactively seeking mentorship and asking questions can ease this transition and accelerate professional growth.

What is the difference between Eit vs Civil Engineer?

AspectEitCivil Engineer
CredentialsPassed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, often a prerequisite for licensureTypically holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and may have professional licensure
Work EnvironmentEntry-level roles, assisting senior engineers in design, analysis, and project supportDesign, project management, and oversight responsibilities in construction and infrastructure projects
Industry UsageUsed as a credential for entry into civil engineering roles, often a stepping stone to licensureLicensed professional engineers (PE) with broader responsibilities and authority

The Eit (Engineer-in-Training) is an entry-level credential obtained after passing the FE exam, serving as a foundation for a career in civil engineering. Civil Engineers typically have licensure and take on more advanced responsibilities. The Eit often works under supervision, while Civil Engineers can lead projects and make independent decisions once licensed.

Our talented team of 500 professionals takes pride in a collaborative approach that ensures project success for clients and communities. An Electrical Engineer-in-Training (EIT) provides both strategic and operational support to service center managers throughout the organization. We are looking for candidates who are:

Detail-oriented and collaborative designers. Our engineers design, review, and update electrical construction drawings for projects that may range from water and wastewater to land development and industrial process applications, depending on the needs of the Service Center. They occasionally accompany project managers for field surveys or inspections and provide support in the design of electrical projects. They may also conduct studies and prepare written reports for clients.

Creative problem solvers. Depending on the project, they may work individually or participate as part of a team on larger-scale efforts, and a wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

Business-minded contributors. They also assist in business development efforts and may help prepare statements of qualifications and proposals for potential clients.

Certified and Experienced. For this role, we are looking for those with an interest in pursuing a career in electrical engineering, specifically industrial applications or electrical power systems.ย  Having a completed four-year electrical engineering degree, CAD experience, good verbal and written communication skills, and 0-5 years of experience working in Electrical Engineering will make you a strong candidate.ย Preferred candidates will have experience of managing projects, managing teams, and modeling in Revit.

Picture yourself here? We encourage you to apply whether your experience aligns with every qualification or not. Weโ€™re focused on cultivating a community of people who can grow with us, and you might be the person weโ€™re looking for, even if you havenโ€™t realized it yet.

Our Offerings:

  • Long-term disability, cancer, and accident insuranceย for a secure future
  • Tuition reimbursementย and mentorship opportunities for your own professional growth and development
  • Incentive bonus programย to keep you on your game
