Job description

Job Summary

The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the company’s Environmental, Health, and Safety programs within a unionized manufacturing environment. This role ensures compliance with regulatory and ISO requirements, drives continuous improvement in safety and environmental performance, and fosters a proactive culture of safety. The EHS Coordinator collaborates closely with site management, union leadership, employees, contractors, and external agencies to minimize risk and support sustainable manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities

EHS Program Development & ISO Alignment

  • Develop, implement, manage, and continuously improve EHS policies, programs, and procedures in alignment with corporate standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance and alignment with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) standards.
  • Support internal and external ISO audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Regulatory Compliance & Audits

  • Monitor compliance with federal, state, local, and industry regulations, including OSHA and EPA requirements.
  • Conduct site audits, inspections, and assessments to identify hazards, risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Prepare, maintain, and submit required regulatory reports, permits, and documentation.
  • Serve as Safety Contract Manager site administrator.

Incident Investigation & Risk Management

  • Lead investigations of safety incidents, accidents, and near misses.
  • Perform thorough root cause analyses and ensure effective corrective and preventive actions are implemented and tracked.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and develop pre-task safety plans.
  • Recommend and enforce workplace safety standards and procedures.

Training & Workforce Development

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver EHS training programs for employees, supervisors, contractors, and union workforce members.
  • Maintain accurate training records and ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Certify new employees in forklift operation and other applicable industrial or material-handling equipment.

Unionized Manufacturing Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with site managers, supervisors, employees, and union representatives to address EHS concerns and promote a cooperative, proactive safety culture.
  • Ensure EHS programs, training, and corrective actions are implemented consistently with collective bargaining agreements (CBAs).
  • Participate in and facilitate site EHS and labor-management safety committee meetings.

Environmental Stewardship

  • Oversee environmental compliance programs, including waste management, pollution prevention, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Promote environmentally responsible practices aligned with corporate goals and customer expectations.

Reporting, Communication & Continuous Improvement

  • Generate, analyze, and present written and verbal reports on EHS performance, compliance status, trends, and improvement initiatives to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Track EHS performance metrics and KPIs to drive continuous improvement and risk reduction.

Education

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an EHS leadership or coordinator role.
