Ehs Apprentice information

What is an EHS apprentice?

An EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) Apprentice is an entry-level professional who assists with workplace safety, health regulations, and environmental compliance programs. They typically work under the guidance of experienced EHS specialists or managers, learning how to identify hazards, implement safety protocols, and ensure regulatory compliance. This role often includes hands-on training, site inspections, and participation in safety meetings, preparing apprentices for more advanced positions in the EHS field.

What are the typical responsibilities of an EHS apprentice?

As an EHS Apprentice, you can expect to be involved in a variety of tasks that support workplace safety and environmental compliance. Common responsibilities include assisting with safety inspections, helping to conduct risk assessments, maintaining safety records, and participating in incident investigations. You may also help organize safety training sessions and ensure that safety equipment is properly maintained. This hands-on experience provides a solid foundation in EHS practices and allows you to work closely with experienced professionals, which is valuable for your future career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EHS apprentice?

To thrive as an EHS Apprentice, you need a solid understanding of environmental, health, and safety regulations, often supported by coursework in occupational safety, environmental science, or related fields. Familiarity with OSHA standards, incident reporting systems, and safety audit tools is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and a proactive attitude help you excel in identifying hazards and promoting safe practices. These skills and qualities are crucial for minimizing workplace risks and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards.

What is the difference between Ehs Apprentice vs Ehs Coordinator?

Employer & Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, construction, and industrial sectors for trainingUsed across industries for safety program management

The Ehs Apprentice role is an entry-level position focused on gaining practical safety and environmental experience, often under supervision. In contrast, the Ehs Coordinator is a more experienced role responsible for implementing safety policies, ensuring compliance, and managing safety programs. While both roles are integral to workplace safety, they differ in responsibilities, certifications, and experience levels.

How to get a job in EHS with no experience?

To start as an EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) apprentice with no experience, focus on gaining relevant knowledge through online courses or certifications such as OSHA training. Highlight transferable skills like attention to detail and safety awareness in your resume, and seek entry-level positions or internships that provide on-the-job training in safety protocols and environmental compliance.

Is EHS apprentice hard to get into?

The EHS apprentice position can be competitive, often requiring relevant safety knowledge, a willingness to learn, and sometimes prior coursework or certifications in environmental health and safety. Candidates with strong communication skills and a proactive attitude have better chances of securing an apprenticeship, which typically involves on-the-job training and mentorship.

Job description

Job Title: Facilities Engineering Lead

Location: Burlingame, CA, with relocation to Sacramento, CA by Q1 2027

Department: Manufacturing Operations / Plant Facilities

Reports to: Head of Facilities

Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt

About the Company:

Peak Energy is the first American venture to advance globally proven Sodium-Ion battery systems as the storage standard for the new era of renewable energy on a resilient grid.

Sodium-Ion is cheap, readily available and safe, making it the leading contender in a rapidly evolving market.

Our leadership team is powered by decades of expertise in scaling gigawatt-level innovation at world-class companies such as Tesla, Northvolt, SunPower, Fluence, and Enovix. We are backed by strategic investment and product partners such as TDK Ventures and Eclipse Ventures.

We are a team of engineers, operators, entrepreneurs, and partners driven by a shared ambition to set the new performance standard for renewable energy and grid resilience.

About the Job:

Peak Energy is looking for a Facilities Engineering Lead to own all things building operations at our battery energy storage system (BESS) manufacturing facility. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for keeping the physical plant — mechanical, electrical, life-safety, and process-support systems — safe, compliant, and running at the reliability level our production lines depend on. You'll lead a small team of technicians, manage outside contractors, and be the go-to person when anything building-related needs attention.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the day-to-day operation, preventive maintenance, and repair of all facility systems: HVAC and process cooling, electrical distribution (low- and medium-voltage), compressed air, plumbing, and building automation/controls.
  • Keep the building envelope, dock doors, cranes/hoists, and material-handling infrastructure that support production lines in good working order.
  • Assist with the development and supervision of a skilled technician team to support ongoing facilities technical needs.
  • Source, qualify, and manage relationships with outside contractors and vendors — electrical, mechanical, fire/life-safety, pest control, janitorial, grounds, and waste/recycling — including scoping, quoting, and invoice review.
  • Serve as the primary on-call escalation point for after-hours facility issues.
  • Plan and execute facility capital projects — line expansions, utility upgrades, tenant improvements, and equipment installs — in partnership with manufacturing/process engineering, EHS, and outside architects/contractors.
  • Own the facilities operating and capital budgets and track spend against forecast.
  • Identify and implement energy-efficiency and sustainability improvements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of progressive, hands-on experience in industrial facilities maintenance, operations, or engineering within a manufacturing, industrial, or heavy-processing environment. Background in battery, electronics, chemical processing, automotive, or similarly regulated/utility-intensive manufacturing is a strong plus.
  • Equivalent experience counts — time served through a trade apprenticeship, military technical training, or progressively responsible maintenance/facilities roles is weighed the same as a formal degree.
  • Prior experience leading, scheduling, or mentoring maintenance/facilities technicians, or clear readiness to step into that role.
  • Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems (up to 480V distribution; medium-voltage exposure a plus), HVAC/process cooling, compressed air, and plumbing systems.
  • Active knowledge of environmental/workplace safety regulations (OSHA, NFPA 70E, EPA, etc.) as they apply to industrial facilities operations.
  • Comfortable with CMMS platforms, basic budgeting, and vendor/contract management.
  • Able to read and work from facility drawings and schematics (electrical one-lines, mechanical P&IDs, floor plans).
  • Strong troubleshooting instincts and willing to personally get hands-on when needed — this is a working-lead role, not a purely administrative one.
  • Able to respond to after-hours emergencies and support occasional weekend/off-shift work for planned shutdowns or projects.
  • Strong interpersonal and people-management skills, with the ability to lead, motivate, and develop a technician team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in facilities management, industrial/mechanical/electrical engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).
  • Journeyman electrician license, HVAC/EPA 608 certification, or equivalent trade license.
  • Forklift certification.
  • MEWP (mobile elevating work platform / aerial lift) certification.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Primarily an active manufacturing floor environment with exposure to noise, temperature variation, and industrial equipment; PPE required in designated areas.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, and to stand, walk, climb, and work in tight or elevated spaces across the facility for extended periods.
  • Will work in proximity to high-voltage equipment and battery chemicals under established safety protocols and with appropriate training/PPE.
  • Must be available to respond on short notice to facility emergencies outside normal business hours.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this role is between $130,000- $160,000 year, with actual pay varying based on work location, experience, and skills. Our competitive benefits package includes:

  • Flexible time off
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Strong 401(k) plan
  • Equity opportunities
  • Many great work perks
