Position Overview
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina is seeking qualified applicants for a full- time Civil Case Administrator/Courtroom Deputy. This position performs a variety of functions to support the Court and serve the bar and the public. The Case Administrator/Courtroom Deputy will be responsible for the case management of, and courtroom proceedings for, all civil cases assigned to him/her. The Case Administrator/Courtroom Deputy is responsible for ensuring that cases proceed smoothly and efficiently. The incumbent will work closely with other case managers and is expected to become fully cross-trained in criminal case management and courtroom proceedings in order to assist and support other team members.
This position is being advertised at a grade CL 25 and has promotional potential to a CL 27. Applications that are received by the initial cut -off date of August 10, 2026, will be given first consideration.
Representative Duties
The Case Administrator/Courtroom Deputy performs duties and responsibilities which include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Opens and closes cases, prepares case-related correspondence and issues summonses.
• Reviews documents for completeness and conformity with the federal and local rules and the policies of this district.
• Photocopies and scans documents.
• Makes summary docket entries and performs quality assurance reviews in the Case Management/Electronic Filing System (CM/ECF).
• Prepares and serves notices, orders, and judgments.
• Runs case management reports in CM/ECF to monitor deadlines and undertake appropriate action.
• Maintains the official court record and manages the progression of cases from case opening to final disposition.
• Processes appeals and appeal-related documents.
• Creates and distributes the judge's calendar and responds to inquiries regarding cases and court procedures from attorneys, self-represented litigants, agencies, and the public.
• Assists the judge with courtroom proceedings including, but not limited to, coordinating the set-up of the courtroom, calling the calendar, impaneling and managing the jury, administering the oath to witnesses and interpreters, managing exhibits, preparing the minutes of the proceedings, preparing jury vouchers, collecting data, and preparing statistical reports.
• Makes small, court-related purchases using an assigned purchase card. Participates in regular training on the use of the purchase card and maintains documentation and timely reporting of purchases.
• Supports other areas of the Clerk's Office and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, an individual must have a four-year degree from an accredited college or university or a North Carolina State Bar Paralegal Certification. The candidate must have at least two years of specialized experience involving legal terminology and demonstrated ability to apply a body of rules, regulations, directives, or laws. Knowledge of civil litigation, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, the Eastern District of North Carolina Local Rules of Practice and Procedure, and CM/ECF is essential. The candidate must possess the ability to communicate information accurately, professionally, and in a timely manner to individuals within and outside the court unit. The Case Administrator/Courtroom Deputy must have a positive attitude and be service-oriented. The candidate must be a self-starter and extremely detail oriented and possess extraordinary organizational and oral and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to enter a high volume of complex data into an automated case management system accurately, adhere to stringent deadlines, and interact effectively with judges, attorneys, litigants, and court personnel. The candidate must be able to work calmly under pressure, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and adapt easily to change. The candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Excel, and WordPerfect and able to work in additional Windows-based applications. A judicial employee must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
Preference will be given to applicants with extensive legal experience in another court or law office. Knowledge of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedures is also preferred.
Conditions of Employment
Applicants must be United States citizens or lawful permanent residents actively seeking citizenship. Judicial Branch employees are considered "at will" employees and are not subject to the employment regulations of competitive service. Salary will be based on experience and qualifications. Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) for payroll deposit is required.
This position may be required to work in excess of a regular eight-hour day or to work an altered work schedule to support the operations of the court, without additional compensation. Travel is required and will include overnight stays for court.

Health Insurance

Employees are responsible for the full group rate premium which is paid through pre-tax payroll deductions.
Life Insurance
Life Insurance can provide peace of mind and financial protection for employees and their loved ones. By way of the Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Program, employees are offered Basic Life Insurance with options to increase coverage and elect coverage for eligible dependents. The federal government pays approximately 1/3 of the Basic Life premium and employees are responsible for paying the remaining 2/3, which is paid via post-tax payroll deductions.
Long Term Care Insurance
Long-term care insurance (LTC) can protect an employee's financial future by helping to pay the high cost of long-term care. Flexible Benefits Program
The Flexible Benefits Program allows employees to increase their take home pay by using the Judiciary's pre-tax options for health care, dependent care, and health insurance premiums. The program has three key components: the Healthcare Reimbursement Account, the Dependent Care Reimbursement Account and the Premium Payment Plan.
Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS)
Recognizing the importance of an employee's future, the federal government provides its employees a retirement program called the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS). It is a three-tiered retirement plan that enables employees to take an active role in securing a strong financial foundation for their retirement. All federal employees are automatically enrolled and may file for retirement once they meet the eligibility requirements. Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)

Vacation/Sick/Other Leave
To assist eligible employees with maintaining a healthy work/life balance, the Judiciary offers a generous amount of leave through a combination of federal holidays, annual (vacation) leave and sick leave. Full time employees with less than three (3) years of service accrue approximately 2.5 weeks of annual leave per year. This increases to 4 weeks from years 3-14, and up to 5 weeks each year when an employee has reached 15 years or more of service. In addition to annual (vacation) leave, full time employees also accrue approximately 2.5 weeks of sick leave each year and are given eleven (11) paid federal holidays.
Wellness Program
The Judiciary recognizes that a positive sense of well-being amongst its employees is a key component of a healthy and productive employee. Wellness activities may include on-site fitness facility, wellness challenges and incentives, annual health fair, stress reduction and health eating programs.
Worker's Compensation
Employees are covered by the provisions of the Federal Employees' Compensation Act, 5 U.S.C. § 8101 et seq., which allows compensation for injuries sustained while in the performance of duty or to employment-related disease.
