What is an EET?

EET stands for Electrical and Electronics Technicians. These professionals are skilled in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical and electronic equipment used in various industries such as manufacturing, telecommunications, and energy. EETs may work with circuitry, control systems, and digital devices, ensuring that equipment operates safely and efficiently. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting malfunctions, testing systems, and following technical diagrams or blueprints.

What are some common challenges Electrical Engineering Technologists (EETs) face when working on multidisciplinary engineering teams?

Electrical Engineering Technologists often collaborate with professionals from mechanical, software, and civil engineering backgrounds. A common challenge is ensuring effective communication across disciplines, as each field may have its own technical language and priorities. EETs must be adept at translating electrical concepts for non-electrical teammates and integrating their work with other systems. This requires flexibility, strong collaborative skills, and a willingness to learn about adjacent fields to ensure project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Engineering Technician (EET), and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineering Technician, you need a solid understanding of electrical theory, circuit design, and troubleshooting, typically supported by an associate degree in electrical engineering technology or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, CAD software, and PLC programming is essential, along with relevant certifications like ISA or ETA. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient development, testing, and maintenance of electrical systems across various industries.

What is the difference between Eet vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectEetElectrical Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically vocational training or associate degreeBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, maintenance facilities, industrial settingsDesign offices, manufacturing plants, research labs
Industry UsageCommonly used in construction, maintenance, and installation rolesUsed in design, development, and testing of electrical systems

In summary, Eet roles focus on installation, maintenance, and hands-on electrical work, often requiring vocational training. Electrical Engineers are involved in designing and developing electrical systems, requiring a bachelor's degree. Both roles are essential in the electrical industry but differ in education, responsibilities, and work environments.

Is EET a good career choice?

EET, or Electrical Engineering Technician, is a technical role that involves installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting electrical systems. It typically requires an associate degree or technical certification and offers opportunities in industries such as manufacturing, telecommunications, and energy. The career can be stable with demand for skilled technicians and potential for advancement with experience and additional certifications.

What can I do with an EET degree?

An EET (Electrical Engineering Technology) degree prepares individuals for careers in designing, testing, and maintaining electrical systems and equipment. Common roles include electrical technician, electronics technician, and systems installer, often requiring knowledge of circuit design, troubleshooting, and relevant tools or certifications. Graduates can work in industries such as manufacturing, telecommunications, or energy, typically in technical or support positions.

Job description

Job Title: Entry-Level Electrical Engineer

Job Description

This entry-level role offers a hands-on opportunity for a junior Electrical Engineer, Electronics Technician, or recent EE/EET graduate to evaluate and troubleshoot returned products that involve electronic generator controllers. You will work with detailed diagnostic procedures, test equipment, and circuit boards to determine failures and support warranty decisions, gaining valuable practical experience early in your career.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and troubleshoot returned electronic generator controllers in a structured and methodical manner.
  • Follow a detailed diagnostic procedure of approximately 12 pages that defines test points, measurements, expected results, and oscilloscope examples.
  • Use a digital multimeter or voltmeter and an oscilloscope to take accurate measurements on circuit boards.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics to identify and probe appropriate locations on printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Compare measured values and observed waveforms against documented expected results to identify discrepancies.
  • Determine whether a returned unit is damaged and help identify the likely cause of failure.
  • Run established automated tests on returned units when applicable to support the diagnostic process.
  • Document test results, observations, and conclusions clearly to support warranty decisions.
  • Escalate unusual, complex, or difficult failures to a Electrical Engineer on the team for further analysis.
  • Work safely when probing and measuring circuits, ensuring proper use of test equipment and adherence to diagnostic procedures.

Essential Skills

  • Basic ability to read and interpret electrical schematics.
  • Hands-on experience using a multimeter or voltmeter for electrical measurements.
  • Basic experience using an oscilloscope to observe and interpret waveforms.
  • Comfort probing and taking measurements on circuit boards safely and accurately.
  • Foundational knowledge of electrical engineering principles relevant to troubleshooting controllers and PCBs.
  • Ability to follow a detailed, step-by-step diagnostic procedure consistently and accurately.
  • Capability to compare measured results and waveforms against documented expected values to identify issues.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to troubleshooting returned units.
  • Clear written communication skills to document findings for warranty decisions.
  • Professional experience is not required; relevant university labs, internships, co-ops, technician experience, or hands-on electronics projects are acceptable.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) or Electrical Engineering Technology (EET), or equivalent technical education.
  • Exposure to troubleshooting electronic controllers, PCBs, or similar electronic systems in labs, internships, or personal projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Electrical Engineers by escalating complex failures and incorporating feedback.
  • Interest in developing deeper expertise in diagnostics, test procedures, and failure analysis of electronic equipment.

Work Environment

You will work in a hands-on electronics environment focused on evaluating and troubleshooting returned electronic generator controllers. The role involves frequent use of digital multimeters, voltmeters, oscilloscopes, and established automated test systems, along with regular reference to detailed diagnostic procedures and electrical schematics. You will interact with circuit boards and electronic assemblies at a workbench or lab setting, documenting your findings to support warranty decisions and collaborating with Electrical Engineers when complex issues arise. The environment emphasizes safety, precision, and methodical troubleshooting, providing a strong foundation for building practical electrical and electronics experience early in your career.
