The Movement Centre of Manitoba is a registered charity that provides Conductive Education and Occupational Therapy rehabilitation services to individuals living with neuromotor disabilities. We are seeking a part-time Conductive Education Assistant (Rehabilitation Assistant) to work directly with our clients in delivering individual and group therapeutic programs to help them gain/regain mobility, confidence and independence. 


What do Conductive Education Assistants (Rehabilitation Assistants) Do?


Under the direction and guidance of the Program Director/Occupational Therapist and Conductors, the Conductive Education Assistant will use their working knowledge of anatomy and understanding of children and adult principles to assist in the facilitation of individual and group conductive education rehabilitation services. Working directly with clients with neuromotor disabilities, the Conductive Education Assistant must have a client-centered mindset and must be familiar with and supportive of challenges that are of concern to the client. The Conductive Education Assistant must be willing to learn and be flexible in order to adapt to changes in individual clients' needs. They must be capable of maintaining composure and efficiency in a high energy, fast paced and physically demanding environment. 


Your Responsibilities:


Assist in delivering conductive education group programs as planned by the Program Director/Occupational Therapist and Conductors.

Assist clients with neuromotor disabilities to participate in rehabilitative exercise therapy such as passive range of motion stretching, floor mobility, ambulation and transfers.

Assist clients in one-on-one situations with problem solving to guide cognitive development while assisting with self-care skills such as dressing, self-feeding, and toileting.  

Safely facilitate clients with tasks and activities to improve motor functions such as coordination and balance.

Provide hands-on support and guidance to clients during functional tasks and exercises to improve fine motor control and upper extremity use. 

Observe and monitor clients' progress, documenting performance and milestones.

Participate in team meetings to discuss individual client progress and evaluation results and suggest potential improvements when appropriate.  

Modify exercises or activities under the supervision and guidance of the Program Director/Occupational Therapist and Conductors based on the participant's abilities and needs.

Provide emotional support to clients, fostering a positive and encouraging atmosphere. 

Facilitate communication and conversation among clients to promote a thriving social group dynamic between clients and staff. 

Educate families or caregivers on strategies to support clients to maximize their independence outside the program.

Protect clients' rights by maintaining confidentiality.

Set up and organize equipment and materials required for sessions.  

Maintain a clean and safe learning environment. 

Accompany clients on the Movement Centre wheelchair accessible van as needed.


Your Qualifications and Skills:


Enrolled in or have completed relevant post-secondary education such as kinesiology or physical education.

Experience working with people with physical disabilities preferred.

Have valid and current Security Checks (clear Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Search, Child and Adult Abuse Registry Checks).

Have an understanding of physiology and body mechanics.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and tact when dealing with client information.

Have a caring and compassionate demeanor with a passion for motivating children and adults living with neuromotor disabilities to reach their full potential.

The Work Conditions and Physical Demands:


You'll work in a fast-paced environment with repetitive physical tasks; attention to detail is required.

There is a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, and kneeling.

You must be able to lift/carry up to 50lbs (manual handling techniques, transferring and transporting clients and equipment).
