To thrive in Editing Publishing, you need excellent language proficiency, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of grammar and style guides, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with editing tools such as Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, and content management systems, along with knowledge of industry-standard style manuals like The Chicago Manual of Style, is typically required. Job description

Lead one of South Florida’s longstanding community newspapers.

The Miami Laker, the English-language community newspaper serving Miami Lakes, is seeking an Editor & Publisher to lead the publication’s editorial voice, community presence, and overall production. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who cares deeply about local journalism and understands how a community newspaper earns trust, grows relevance, and serves readers and advertisers alike. The position oversees editorial content, advertising, design, and final layout across 24 issues annually.

This is an opportunity for a seasoned news professional who enjoys reporting, editing, relationship-building, and running a publication with real community impact.

About The Miami Laker and The Graham Companies

The Miami Laker is a bi-monthly, English-language newspaper owned by The Graham Companies and dedicated to covering the people, institutions, businesses, and issues that shape life in Miami Lakes. The paper covers local government, schools, sports, churches, businesses, and community leaders, with an emphasis on highlighting Miami Lakes as a business-friendly and family-oriented community.

What You’ll Do

As Editor & Publisher, you will lead the day-to-day and long-range execution of the newspaper. This role combines editorial leadership, publication management, community engagement, advertising support, and production oversight.

You will:

  • Lead the overall production of The Miami Laker
  • Write, edit, assign, and photograph stories for publication
  • Oversee reporting, photography, editing, and content quality
  • Ensure accuracy, tone, and adherence to AP Style
  • Manage and develop advertising and reporting staff
  • Oversee workflow to deliver a timely, high-quality publication
  • Design editorial and advertising layout for each issue
  • Oversee final production and print readiness
  • Maintain and grow relationships with advertisers and community stakeholders
  • Attend municipal meetings, community events, and functions as a visible representative of the paper
  • Create social media posts and publish content to the newspaper website
  • Oversee ad sales strategy, advertising commissions, billing, receivables/payables, and the annual budget

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a journalist and publication leader who is energized by community news and comfortable wearing multiple hats.

Qualified candidates will bring:

  • 5+ years of journalism experience, including experience managing reporters or content creators
  • Experience in public relations, marketing, or advertising
  • Experience in local or community journalism preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud on Apple computers, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro
  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong editing judgment and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and thrive under deadline pressure
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships across a community

Why This Role Stands Out

This is more than a traditional editor role. It’s a chance to shape the voice and future of a respected local publication while being deeply embedded in the life of a vibrant South Florida community. The right candidate will enjoy the variety, visibility, and responsibility that come with leading a small but impactful newspaper.

Work Environment

This role involves a mix of office-based work, digital publishing, and in-person community engagement. The Editor & Publisher regularly works on a computer, interacts with staff and community members, travels locally for meetings and events, and may attend evening or weekend functions. The role also operates in a fast-paced environment with shifting deadlines and priorities.

If you are a strong editor, community storyteller, and publication leader who believes in the value of local news, we encourage you to apply!
