Editing Positions information

What is an editing position?

Editing positions refer to jobs where individuals review, revise, and improve written content to ensure clarity, accuracy, and consistency. Editors work in various industries, including publishing, media, marketing, and corporate communications. Their responsibilities may include correcting grammar and punctuation, restructuring content, checking facts, and maintaining a publication's style. There are different types of editing roles, such as copy editors, content editors, and managing editors, each with specific duties depending on the organization or publication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in editing positions, and why are they important?

To thrive in editing positions, you need a solid grasp of grammar, style, and language mechanics, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with editing software such as Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Word tracking, and style guides like AP or Chicago Manual is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills set outstanding editors apart. These skills ensure accuracy, consistency, and clear messaging in published content, which are crucial for maintaining credibility and audience trust.

How do editing positions typically collaborate with writers and other team members during the content production process?

Editors regularly work alongside writers, designers, and sometimes subject matter experts to ensure content meets quality standards and aligns with organizational goals. This collaboration often involves providing constructive feedback, clarifying editorial guidelines, and occasionally participating in brainstorming sessions. Editors may also coordinate with project managers to meet deadlines and with fact-checkers or proofreaders to verify accuracy. Strong communication and a willingness to adapt to different team dynamics are essential for success in these roles.

What is the difference between Editing Positions vs Copy Editors?

AspectEditing PositionsCopy Editors
CredentialsTypically require a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or related fieldsSimilar credentials, often with additional certification in editing or proofreading
Work EnvironmentWork in publishing houses, media companies, or freelance settingsWork primarily in publishing, media, or corporate communications
Industry UsageUsed broadly across publishing, media, and online contentSpecifically focused on refining and correcting written content
Search & ComparisonOften compared for scope and responsibilitiesMore specialized in editing and proofreading tasks

Editing positions encompass a broad range of roles involving reviewing and improving content, while copy editors focus specifically on correcting grammar, style, and accuracy. Both roles require similar credentials and are common in publishing and media industries. The main difference lies in scope: editing positions may include developmental editing, while copy editors concentrate on polishing the final text.

Job description

The Detroit Free Press seeks a strong editor to lead a team of two education reporters as a one-year grant-funded editing fellow as part of a rapid expansion of education coverage statewide.

This editor will work with a statewide education reporting fellow and a regional education reporting fellow, setting priorities for coverage to have the most impact.

They’ll be a thought partner, from reporters’ early efforts to build relationships with communities to story development and the editing process and will help facilitate community engagement

This team will use every medium and platform — video, social, articles, in-person engagements and visuals — to help parents, lawmakers and community leaders understand the challenges in need of solutions at a time when Michigan children lag other states in reading, math, attendance and postsecondary education attainment.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 1-3 years of editing or related experience
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong line-editing and story planning skills
  • Strong people-management and problem solving skills
  • Comfortable on camera, and interacting with readers and stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of audience analytics, SEO and engagement strategies
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law

How To Apply:

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

  1. Your resume – one to two pages.
  2. A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
  3. Links to 3-6 online samples of your work or online portfolio. Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
