What is an EDI?

An EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) job typically involves managing the exchange of business documents in a standardized electronic format between companies. Professionals in this field ensure seamless data transmission, troubleshoot technical issues, and maintain compliance with industry standards. They may work with EDI software, map data, and coordinate with trading partners to optimize transactions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the EDI position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) Specialist, you need a solid background in information technology, data integration, and business process workflows, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with EDI mapping tools, VANs (Value Added Networks), common EDI standards (such as ANSI X12, EDIFACT), and relevant certifications is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help EDI Specialists work efficiently across departments and with external partners. These skills ensure the secure, smooth, and accurate electronic exchange of business data, which is critical for operational efficiency and maintaining strong business relationships.

What are some typical challenges EDI specialists face in their daily work, and how can they be addressed?

EDI Specialists often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting data transmission errors, resolving mapping issues, and ensuring data compliance with different trading partners' requirements. Successful EDI professionals proactively monitor transactions, maintain detailed documentation, and stay updated on changing industry standards to address these issues efficiently. Collaborating closely with both IT and business teams is critical to quickly identify and resolve integration problems. Developing strong analytical and communication skills can greatly assist in diagnosing complex issues and implementing effective solutions in a fast-paced environment.

Is EDI a good career choice?

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a specialized field involving the electronic exchange of business documents, often requiring knowledge of standards like ANSI X12 or EDIFACT. It offers opportunities in supply chain, logistics, and healthcare industries, with roles typically involving technical skills, data management, and sometimes certifications. The career can be stable and growing as organizations increasingly adopt digital data exchange methods.

Job description

Position Summary

The Legacy Companies (TLC) is seeking an experienced, hands-on EDI Manager to provide immediate leadership to our EDI function. This role is responsible for taking charge of our existing EDI team, establishing clear communication and accountability, and rapidly diagnosing and resolving the bottlenecks currently slowing trading partner onboarding and day-to-day EDI operations. Once operational stability is achieved, this person will lead a company-wide effort to fully document our EDI processes for every trading partner, start to finish.

This is a working-manager role requiring both leadership capability and hands-on technical proficiency. The EDI Manager will be expected to lead team meetings and set priorities, while also possessing the technical depth to directly investigate and resolve issues such as a failed 850/810 transaction or mapping error. This individual will serve as the primary point of escalation with our EDI VAN provider, holding them accountable for clear timelines and progress on stalled onboarding projects. Additionally, this person will be responsible for establishing structure, accountability, and consistent communication rhythms for the team.

Key Responsibilities

Phase 1 Priorities (Immediate)

  • Take direct management of two EDI Analysts, establishing clear roles, priorities, and daily/weekly communication rhythms
  • Assess and stabilize communication between the internal EDI team, the ERP/Infor M3 mapping consultant, our EDI VAN provider, and relevant business leaders
  • Cultivate a reputation for the EDI team as a proactive, solutions-oriented partner to the business, rather than a source of delays or obstacles
  • Identify root causes behind the extended trading partner onboarding timeline and build a plan to bring that timeline down significantly
  • Establish visibility (status reporting, tracking) into open onboarding projects and EDI issues for IT leadership
  • Triage and resolve backlog of open EDI issues/tickets

Phase 2 Priorities (Following Stabilization)

  • Lead full documentation of all EDI processes, trading partner by trading partner, from onboarding through steady-state support
  • Build repeatable, documented onboarding procedures to reduce time-to-live for new trading partners
  • Establish standard operating procedures for ongoing EDI support and issue escalation
  • Recommend longer-term structure/staffing needs for the EDI function

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of EDI experience, including at least 2+ years in a leadership/management capacity over EDI analysts or teams
  • Strong working knowledge of EDI standards (X12) and common transaction sets (850, 810, 856, 855, 997, etc.)
  • Experience managing trading partner onboarding from kickoff through go-live
  • Experience working with EDI VANs/networks; SPS Commerce experience preferred
  • Infor M3 experience strongly preferred (or comparable ERP EDI backend/MEC mapping experience)
  • Proven ability to build and improve processes, documentation, and team communication practices from a less mature starting point
  • Strong vendor management and cross-functional communication skills
  • Ability to work fully remote while establishing hands-on leadership and trust with an existing, previously unmanaged team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in distribution, foodservice, hospitality, or retail industries
  • Familiarity with MEC mapping tools
  • Experience standing up EDI documentation/SOPs from scratch
