What is EDI mapping?

EDI mapping is the process of translating data between an internal system and an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standard format. It involves converting data fields from a business's software (like ERP or accounting systems) into the required EDI format so that information can be exchanged accurately with external partners. EDI mapping ensures that the data sent and received is correctly interpreted, facilitating seamless business transactions and reducing manual errors. This process is essential for companies that rely on automated electronic communication with suppliers, customers, or logistics providers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EDI mapping specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EDI Mapping Specialist, you need a solid understanding of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standards, data mapping techniques, and experience with data transformation processes, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with EDI translation software (like Gentran, Sterling Integrator, or SPS Commerce), mapping tools, and knowledge of protocols such as X12, EDIFACT, and XML is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help specialists identify data discrepancies and collaborate with business partners. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate, efficient, and seamless electronic data exchange between organizations.

What are some common challenges faced by EDI mapping professionals, and how can they be addressed?

EDI Mapping professionals often encounter challenges such as managing complex data transformations between disparate systems, ensuring compliance with various industry standards, and troubleshooting data discrepancies. Addressing these issues typically involves maintaining clear documentation, collaborating closely with IT and business teams to clarify requirements, and staying updated on evolving EDI standards. Regular testing and validation of mapping logic, along with proactive communication with trading partners, can also help mitigate errors and streamline the mapping process.

How to become an EDI mapping analyst?

To become an EDI mapping analyst, candidates typically need a background in information technology, computer science, or related fields, along with experience in EDI standards and data mapping tools such as BizTalk or Sterling. Developing skills in data analysis, understanding of supply chain processes, and obtaining certifications like Certified EDI Professional can enhance job prospects. Proficiency in scripting languages and attention to detail are also important for success in this role.

How to get an EDI mapping job?

To get an EDI mapping job, candidates typically need a background in supply chain, logistics, or computer science, along with knowledge of EDI standards and mapping tools like Gentran or Liaison. Relevant certifications and experience with data integration, scripting, or programming can improve job prospects. Entry-level roles may require familiarity with healthcare, retail, or manufacturing industry processes.

What does an EDI mapping analyst do?

An EDI mapping analyst is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining electronic data interchange (EDI) maps that enable the transfer of business documents between systems. They use specialized tools to translate data formats, ensure data accuracy, and troubleshoot mapping issues to support seamless supply chain and transaction processes.

Job description

Job Summary:
Veracity Software Pvt. Ltd. is seeking a hands-on EDI Mapping Specialist to accelerate trading partner onboarding and stabilize EDI connectivity during a high-urgency modernization and migration effort. This role focuses on building and troubleshooting EDI maps, supporting translation workflows, and improving onboarding speed through repeatable templates and automation-minded execution.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Build, maintain, and troubleshoot EDI maps and translation logic across standard X12 transaction sets in high-volume environments.
โ€ข Support platform transition work involving legacy EDI tooling and translation engines, including environments leveraging Trusted Link and IBM translation capabilities (ITXA experience strongly preferred).
โ€ข Execute and improve trading partner onboarding processes (customers, suppliers, and financial partners) with a focus on speed, repeatability, and quality.
โ€ข Create reusable mapping templates, validation rules, exception-handling patterns, and testing playbooks to reduce cycle time and rework.
โ€ข Collaborate with onshore leads, cross-functional stakeholders, and partner IT teams to diagnose issues quickly and keep onboarding/operations moving.
โ€ข Contribute to automation and self-service enablement concepts (portal thinking, standardized intake, repeatable workflows) to reduce long-term run-team size.
Qualifications:
Required:
โ€ข Hands-on EDI mapping experience with core X12 supply chain transactions โ€” candidates must have directly built and supported mappings for 850 (Purchase Order), 855 (PO Acknowledgement), 856 (ASN), and 810 (Invoice) in production (not just general EDI familiarity).
โ€ข Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot mapping failures by analyzing the transaction content and map logic (not only middleware/connectivity layers).
โ€ข Industry experience where those transactions are common โ€” logistics, healthcare supply chain, distribution, or retail ecosystems (experience must show real trading-partner onboarding and production support).
โ€ข Experience with enterprise EDI tooling ecosystems (e.g., IBM Sterling Integrator; familiarity with Trusted Link; ITXA exposure preferred).
โ€ข Strong communication discipline: proactive status, clear explanations, and fast turnaround in business hours.
Preferred:
โ€ข Healthcare supply chain, distributor, hospital-system, or similarly complex B2B trading partner ecosystems. (etc. Walmart, CVS)
โ€ข Prior experience helping design or implement automation for onboarding (templating, repeatable workflows, improved testing/validation).
โ€ข Experience supporting large trading partner populations and long-lived maps maintained over many years.
Company:
At Veracity, if you have an idea you want to validate, a product you need to build, or an existing product that needs optimization, our teams are trained to jump in wherever needed. Founded in 2010, the company is headquartered in Iselin, USA, with a team of 51-200 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
