What are common challenges faced by professionals working in edge computing roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in edge computing roles often face challenges such as ensuring seamless data processing across distributed devices, maintaining network reliability, and implementing robust security measures for decentralized systems. Additionally, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams—including IoT engineers, cloud architects, and cybersecurity experts—is vital to address integration and performance issues. Staying updated on evolving edge technologies and industry best practices can help professionals navigate these challenges and deliver efficient, secure solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an edge computing engineer?

To thrive as an Edge Computing Engineer, you need expertise in distributed systems, networking, cloud/edge infrastructure, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), IoT platforms, and edge-specific frameworks such as Azure IoT Edge or AWS Greengrass is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help drive innovation and cross-functional collaboration. These skills are crucial for building reliable, scalable edge solutions that process data efficiently and securely at the network's edge.

What is an edge computing job?

Edge computing jobs involve developing, deploying, and maintaining technology that processes data closer to where it is generated, rather than relying on centralized data centers or cloud computing. Professionals in this field work on optimizing network performance, building edge devices, ensuring data security, and enabling real-time analytics for industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and telecommunications. Typical roles include edge software engineers, network architects, and IoT specialists. These jobs require knowledge of distributed systems, networking, and often experience with hardware integration.

Job description

Commercial Roofing Estimator

Compensation: $35.00 - $40.00 per hour (Based on Experience)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Commercial Roofing Estimator to join our team. This is a true bench estimating position focused exclusively on preparing accurate estimates from construction plans for commercial new construction projects. There are no sales responsibilities, site surveys, client meetings, or contract reviews—allowing you to focus on what you do best: reading plans and producing precise estimates.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in low-slope commercial roofing, extensive experience using Edge Estimating Software, and the ability to accurately interpret construction drawings and specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed material quantity takeoffs and cost estimates from owner- or contractor-provided construction plans.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, and project documents for commercial new construction projects.
  • Utilize Edge Estimating Software to produce accurate and timely estimates.
  • Maintain bid schedules and prioritize multiple estimating deadlines.
  • Coordinate with vendors to obtain material pricing when needed.
  • Ensure estimates are accurate, complete, and aligned with project requirements.
  • Maintain organized estimating documentation and project records.

Qualifications

  • Required: Experience using Edge Estimating Software.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial low-slope roofing systems, including TPO, PVC, and other single-ply systems.
  • Proven experience reading construction plans, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Experience estimating commercial new construction roofing projects.
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Preferred Experience

  • Commercial roofing estimating experience in a high-volume environment.
  • Familiarity with material takeoffs, bid preparation, and new construction workflows.

Compensation & Benefits

  • $35.00 - $40.00 per hour, based on experience
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • Company-paid Basic Life Insurance
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
  • 401(k) with Profit Sharing
  • Paid Time Off and Paid Holidays
  • Employee Discount Program

Why This Opportunity?

This is an excellent opportunity for an estimator who enjoys the technical side of commercial roofing. You'll spend your time estimating from plans—not selling, performing site visits, negotiating contracts, or managing client relationships. If you're highly skilled with Edge, have strong plan-reading abilities, and possess solid low-slope roofing knowledge, this role offers the chance to focus on your expertise while working with a stable and growing organization.
