The Development Engineer - Chassis Controls Systems & Software is responsible for the development, integration, validation, and release of embedded systems and software that enable vehicle motion across braking, steering, suspension, propulsion, and stability control into a coordinated vehicle motion control domain. This role collaborates with systems, controls, hardware, calibration, validation, and supplier engineering teams to deliver robust, safety-critical software that meets vehicle performance, quality, cybersecurity, and functional safety requirements.
The Development Engineer will support the complete software development lifecycle-from concept development and requirements definition through implementation, verification, vehicle integration, launch, and production support-while contributing to the advancement of Oshkosh's transition towards software-defined commercial vehicle platforms.
YOUR IMPACT:
  • Drive the definition and evolution of Vehicle Motion Controls electrical/electronic architecture, functional decomposition, and feature integration including Electronic Stability Control, Anti-Lock Braking, Traction Control, Electric Power Steering, and associated Value-Added features for commercial vehicles.
  • Define system requirements, control strategies, software architecture, and interface specifications.
  • Cross-functional support for Systems Engineering, software development, vehicle system calibration, integration, validation and launch activities.
  • Deliver software and ECU releases through disciplined design reviews, configuration management, supplier collaboration, and continuous quality and cost improvement.
  • Develop, integrate, validate, and release embedded software for commercial vehicle chassis control systems, including:
    • Electronic Braking Systems (EBS)
    • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
    • Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS)
    • Traction Control Systems (TCS)
    • Electric Power Steering (EPS)
    • Vehicle Motion/Chassis Domain Controller (VMC)
  • Coordination with the Powertrain, ADAS, Autonomy, and supplier engineering teams to deliver a holistic Vehicle Motion Controls driving experience for our customers.
  • Drive software quality through peer reviews, requirements traceability, static analysis, automated testing, and continuous integration.
  • Develop diagnostic strategies, service functions, and software update capabilities supporting manufacturing, field service, and over-the-air deployment.
  • Optimize software for commercial vehicle performance, durability, reliability, payload management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with controls, systems, cybersecurity, functional safety, diagnostics, and vehicle integration teams to deliver production-ready software.
  • Support Model-Based Development (MBD), including MIL, SIL, and HIL verification activities.
  • Integrate supplier-developed software into vehicle platforms while ensuring compliance with program timing, quality objectives, and software release processes.
  • Coordinate the development and execution of software verification and validation plans to ensure compliance with functional, safety, regulatory, and performance requirements.
  • Analyze software defects, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), and vehicle performance issues through root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Support prototype vehicle builds, software flashing, calibration activities, and vehicle testing.
  • Participate in software technical reviews, architecture reviews, design reviews, and release readiness assessments.
  • Support production launch activities, manufacturing issue resolution, and continuous software improvements through over-the-air (OTA) or service software updates where applicable.
  • Ensure software development complies with Automotive SPICE (ASPICE), ISO 26262 Functional Safety, and ISO/SAE 21434 Cybersecurity requirements.
  • Ensure that technical issues are resolved within the framework of company policies and procedures.
  • Perform engineering analysis to support the selection of parts, components, and materials that meet requirements.
  • Conduct duties consistent with the Company's mission statement, quality objectives, and defined policies and procedures.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% as required to support suppliers, prototype builds, vehicle testing, manufacturing launches, and customer visits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Accredited Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience developing embedded automotive software and/or calibration.
  • Experience developing embedded control systems and software for automotive applications.
  • Experience with embedded controls development including Matlab/Simulink or ETAS Ascet.
  • Experience with requirements management tools such as DOORS, Jama, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of automotive communication protocols including:
    • CAN / CAN FD
    • LIN
    • Automotive Ethernet
  • Experience using automotive diagnostics (UDS, DTCs) and calibration tools.
  • Understanding software integration, debugging, and root cause analysis.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

STANDOUT QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Accredited Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience developing embedded automotive software and/or calibration.
  • Applied experience with:
    • MATLAB/Simulink
    • AUTOSAR Classic and/or Adaptive
    • Vector CANoe, CANalyzer, or CANape
    • ETAS INCA
    • Git or other version control systems
    • Jenkins or CI/CD automation
    • Atlassian Jira
    • Python scripting
  • Cross functional experience in the automotive product lifecycle including vehicle level validation, launch and field support.
  • Experience with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), and Model-in-the-Loop (MIL) testing.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 26262 Functional Safety processes.
  • Familiarity with ISO/SAE 21434 Automotive Cybersecurity.
  • Experience with commercial vehicle or heavy-duty vehicle chassis systems.
  • Knowledge of Agile software development and Automotive SPICE.

Pay Range:
$79,300.00 - $126,900.00
The above pay range reflects the minimum and maximum target pay for the position across all U.S. locations.
