What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Ecosystem Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ecosystem Scientist, you need a strong background in ecology, biology, environmental science, and data analysis, typically supported by a relevant degree such as a BSc or MSc in environmental or biological sciences. Competence with GIS software, statistical analysis tools, and field sampling equipment is commonly required, along with certifications in environmental monitoring or research methods. Critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication are essential soft skills for synthesizing data and working with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately assessing ecosystem health, informing conservation efforts, and guiding sustainable management decisions.

What are some typical collaborative projects or partners an Ecosystem Scientist might work with?

Ecosystem Scientists frequently collaborate with government agencies, conservation organizations, and academic researchers to address environmental challenges such as habitat restoration, biodiversity monitoring, or climate impact assessments. These projects often involve multidisciplinary teams, incorporating expertise from hydrology, wildlife biology, and data science. Building strong partnerships is essential, as these collaborations enable Ecosystem Scientists to gather comprehensive data, apply for joint funding, and implement effective management strategies across large landscapes.

What is ecosystem science?

Ecosystem science is the study of interactions among organisms and their environment as a system. It focuses on understanding how living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components of ecosystems, such as plants, animals, microbes, soil, water, and climate, interact to shape the structure and function of natural systems. Ecosystem scientists investigate processes like nutrient cycling, energy flow, and ecosystem services, often to inform conservation, land management, and policy. This field is interdisciplinary, combining biology, ecology, geography, and environmental science to address complex environmental challenges.

What is the difference between Ecosystem Science vs Environmental Science?

AspectEcosystem ScienceEnvironmental Science
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Ecology, Biology, or Environmental ScienceBachelor's or Master's in Environmental Science, Ecology, or related fields
Work EnvironmentField research, ecological monitoring, data analysisLaboratory, fieldwork, policy analysis
Employer & IndustryResearch institutions, conservation agencies, universitiesGovernment agencies, NGOs, consulting firms

Both Ecosystem Science and Environmental Science involve understanding ecological systems, but Ecosystem Science focuses specifically on the interactions within ecosystems, often emphasizing field research and ecological modeling. Environmental Science has a broader scope, including pollution, policy, and sustainability issues. Professionals in both fields often share similar credentials and work environments, but their focus areas differ, making them distinct yet related careers.

Job description

At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We're looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.

Organization and Position Overview:

Lilly recently announced a $4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.

In the Project Delivery Phase and Startup Phase of the project (2025 to 2028), roles will be fluid and dynamic as we endeavor to support the project delivery, build a new organization, develop and implement the necessary systems and business processes required to support GMP operations. This will require significant collaboration, creativity and resilience as the Lilly Medicine Foundry goes from design, to start-up, and to steady-state operations.

The Laboratory Informatics Scientist role, a technical-track position with an emphasis on electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) development and template design, seeks a collaborative, inclusive, and energetic individual who will play a key role in building and supporting the digital ecosystem that powers the Lilly Medicine Foundry laboratories, with a primary focus on designing and deploying structured ELN templates across multiple platforms including LabVantage ELN, Signals, and Benchling. The rolewill help implement, configure, and maintain critical laboratory informatics platforms, including ELN/LES, LIMS, MODA, Empower, and other systems that enable efficient, compliant scientific operations. This position is ideal for someone with experience in ELN template development, non-GMP development workflows, or technology transfer who thrives at the intersection of science, technology, and quality. You will collaborate with global and local IT teams, laboratory scientists, process chemists, biologists, and quality partners to ensure data integrity, system reliability, and seamless lab workflows. As the systems mature, your role will evolve into serving as the site ELN subject matter expert across all modalities, leading continuous improvement initiatives for notebook workflows, mentoring users, supporting audits, and executing long-term digital strategy for the lab. This is a unique opportunity to grow your informatics career within a state-of-the-art digital laboratory environment and help shape foundational capabilities for the Medicine Foundry.

Responsibilities:

  • Configure, deploy, and support laboratory informatics platforms, with primary ownership of ELN systems (LabVantage ELN, Signals, Benchling), and cross-trained backup support for LIMS, MODA, LES, and Empower.
  • Design, develop, and maintain structured ELN templates, notebook forms, and review/approval workflows that work harmoniously across multiple ELN platforms.
  • Participate in system installation, qualification, validation activities, and periodic reviews to maintain a validated state.
  • Troubleshoot system issues and serve as a primary technical point of contact (SME) for lab users.
  • Monitor the performance of laboratory informatics systems to ensure data integrity, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Drive enhancements to ELN templates, digital workflows, automation opportunities, and enduser experience.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives aligned with quality systems and laboratory operations.
  • Maintain compliance with cGMP/GLP and data integrity expectations across laboratory systems.
  • Prepare and author quality system deliverables, including management review summaries, deviations, CAPAs, and system documentation.
  • Support internal and external audit readiness and represent laboratory systems during inspections.
  • Develop training materials and deliver user training for new systems, functionality, or processes.
  • Partner closely with scientists and IT teams to align system functionality with lab needs.
  • Contribute to project planning, timelines, and resource recommendations for lab informatics initiatives.
  • Model an inclusive, collaborative mindset that encourages diverse perspectives and creative problemsolving.

Basic Requirements:

  • B.S. in Computer Science, Information Systems, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, or related discipline, with 3+ years experience OR H.S./Associates degree with 5+ years experience supporting or administering laboratory informatics systems (ELN, LIMS, LES, QC systems, or similar), with preference for hands-on ELN template development or configuration experience in a regulated environment (GxP, GLP, GMP).
  • Handson experience with computerized system validation (CSV) concepts and data integrity requirements.
  • Experience configuring systems, populating master data, or supporting system deployment/upgrade activities.
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position

Additional Preferences:

  • Familiarity with endtoend analytical workflows in a QC or development lab
  • Proficiency with computer systems including Microsoft Office products, LIMS, Laboratory Execution Systems, chromatography systems, electronic laboratory notebook systems (e.g., Signals, Benchling, LabVantage ELN) including template development and implementation of systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive and accept change.
  • Good interpersonal skills and a sustained tendency for collaboration.
