How much do ecad component librarian jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for ecad component librarian in the United States is $71,250.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $54,500.00 and $73,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical challenges faced by an ECAD Component Librarian, and how can they be addressed?

ECAD Component Librarians often face the challenge of maintaining accuracy and consistency across a rapidly growing component library while ensuring compliance with evolving industry standards. Managing frequent requests for new parts and staying updated with manufacturer documentation can be demanding. To address these challenges, it's important to establish clear naming conventions, implement robust version control processes, and maintain open communication with design and engineering teams. Regular audits and training can also help keep the library organized and reliable.

What are ECAD Component Librarians?

ECAD Component Librarians are professionals responsible for creating, managing, and maintaining electronic component libraries used in Electronic Computer-Aided Design (ECAD) tools. They ensure that all components, such as symbols, footprints, and 3D models, are accurate and up-to-date, which helps engineers design reliable printed circuit boards (PCBs). ECAD Component Librarians also verify component specifications, manage revisions, and enforce library standardization across design teams. Their work is essential for efficient design flows and reducing errors during the PCB development process.

What is the difference between Ecad Component Librarian vs PCB Design Engineer?

The Ecad Component Librarian focuses on managing and organizing electronic component libraries within EDA tools, ensuring accurate and accessible component data. In contrast, a PCB Design Engineer actively designs and layouts printed circuit boards. While both roles require electronics knowledge, the librarian emphasizes library management, whereas the engineer emphasizes circuit design and layout tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ECAD Component Librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ECAD Component Librarian, you need expertise in electronic component data management, PCB design principles, and familiarity with industry standards, often supported by a degree in electronics or a related field. Proficiency with ECAD tools such as Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics, or Cadence, and experience with library management systems, is essential. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication help ensure accuracy and collaboration with engineering teams. These skills are crucial to maintain high-quality, consistent libraries that streamline design processes and prevent costly errors in electronic product development.

  • Review and approve new component requests
  • Define baseline quality requirements for COTS components and enforce them through design BOM reviews
  • Monitor and assess PCNs and lifecycle changes (NRND/EOL), and drive mitigation actions through Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
  • Partner with Electrical Engineering to select components that meet performance, cost, and availability targets
  • Build and maintain preferred parts lists and approved vendor lists (AVL)
  • Support supply chain with alternate part evaluations and second-sourcing strategies
  • Engage directly with suppliers to resolve technical questions
Required qualifications:
  • B.S. in an engineering field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Understanding of Product Lifecycle Management (Arena, Teamcenter), ECAD tools (Altium) and structured component libraries
  • Strong judgment in balancing performance, cost and supply chain risk
  • Demonstrated track record of ownership, high standards, and effective collaboration
Preferred qualifications:
  • Degree in electrical engineering or computer science
  • Familiar with industry-standard component qualification process (AEC-Q, NASA, JEDEC, MIL, etc)
  • Knowledge of electrical component manufacturing processes and common failure modes.
