SUMMARY:
Seeking a certified social studies high school instructor to serve as a CORE Advisor (mentor-teacher) for a caseload of students, and to teach up to four sections per semester of high school Social Studies in a dynamic, rigorous, equity-focused early college program. The following primary certifications are being sought:
Secondary Social Studies (CQ or RX preferred): History/Geography (RC/RB or CC/CB), Civics/Political Science (RI or CD), Economics (RA or CA)
ECA's Vision, Mission, & Values: The vision of the ECA is to bridge the gap between high school and college, enhancing life outcomes while fostering a democratic society. The mission of the ECA is to empower high school students from diverse backgrounds to earn up to 60 university credits towards a Bachelor's Degree. The values of the ECA are Social Justice, Strong & Supportive Relationships, Diversity, Growth Mindset, & Individualized Educational Pathways.
Washtenaw Educational Options Consortium (WEOC) is the organizing authority under which the ECA operates. WEOC functions in a way similar to a school district, and 4 county-wide programs operate within its structure: the ECA, the Washtenaw International High School, Washtenaw International Middle Academy, and the Washtenaw Alliance for Virtual Education. WEOC was voted by its employees as one of Michigan's Top Workplaces in 2021, and was the only Top Workplace non-profit in the top 75. The ECA is located on the campus of Eastern Michigan University, which is among the most diverse college campuses in Michigan.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned)
- Teach high-rigor, college-preparatory classes to a diverse group of high school students focusing on critical thinking skills and analysis.
- Create lesson plans and curriculum to prepare students for college level work and expectations.
- Enact principles of equity and social justice in and out of the classroom.
- Develop and implement unique lessons & assessments in alignment with the Michigan Merit Curriculum applicable subject-area standards, and Eastern Michigan University's coursework, as well as to address the general expectations of the SAT.
- Assist students with the social-emotional demands of the early college setting, including holding honest, individual coaching conversations designed to maximize each student's strengths, build skills in weak areas, and overcome barriers at the high school or college level.
- Implement the Early College Alliance soft skills curriculum while simultaneously upholding and modeling the ECA soft skills and values as a teacher mentor.
- Hold regular office hours
- Communicate effectively, proactively, and appropriately with students, families, and colleagues via electronic and verbal means.
- Provide tutoring support in various content areas to students in Applied Studies and the after-school tutoring program.
- Assist with administrative tasks and support other ECA teachers both in and out of the classroom.
- Support a team-based approach to problem solving, while functioning with a high degree of autonomy and self-direction.
- Maintain exemplary records for classroom and CORE duties.
- Work in a highly collaborative and high-performing team.
- Work cooperatively with District and constituent district staff, students and parents/guardians, and our EMU and community partners.
- Adhere to District health and safety rules, policies and procedures.
- Support ECA's vision, mission, and values.
- Support WEOC vision and mission to enhance achievement for all students.Â
QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Hold a valid State of Michigan Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in the appropriate content area.
- Experience planning and implementing lessons
- Experience collecting and using data to inform decisions
- Experience working with diverse student populations, particularly those underrepresented in higher education.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and government regulations.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of supervisors, employees, customers, vendors and the general public.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
- Ability to use a personal computer in a networked environment including the use of email, voice/video communication tools, projection devices, databases and webinar resources.
- Competency in the use of Microsoft Office productivity applications is required.
- Ability to integrate technology into the everyday work flow is necessary.
- Ability to select and administer appropriate assessment tools and interpret results of assessments.Â
