Position Overview

Our assistant superintendents assist with building the earthwork component of a project including site grading, road construction, road improvements, drainage improvements, road maintenance, dewatering, soil correction, foundation excavation and backfill, utilities and any other necessary civil improvements required for a project. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Inspect construction activities in accordance with established quality procedures and evaluate compliance with project plans, specifications, shop drawings and other project related documents.
  • Know, understand and consistently enforce Vaughn's safety program and OSHA rules.
  • Provide technical assistance, e.g. interpretation of drawings, recommended construction methods and equipment, etc. as required.
  • Actively coordinate trade and associated installations in advance to mitigate conflicts due to sequencing, constructability, schedule and/or spatial issues.
  • Review plans, specifications, general notes and shop/working drawings for assigned activities prior to performing assigned duties.
  • Communicate positively among employees and works as a team with project management, QA/QC and safety co-workers.
  • Help sustain a positive company image.
  • Assist in effectively training foremen and workers to adhere to policies/procedures, submittals, schedules, contracting and motivating assistants to uphold core values by leading through example.
  • Develop professional relationship with client and design team to ensure project is delivered successfully.
  • Ensure all on-site personnel comply with project procedures.
  • Exhibit organization skills to ensure loose ends are cleaned up and completes projects timely.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of time sheets, unit reporting, daily construction reports and labor projections.
  • Review and works within company policies and procedures.
  • Work integrally with project management team on status reports labor and material projections
  • Actively work on schedule development and maintenance to ensure coordinated and timely installations. Ensure schedule is followed or changed if necessary.
  • Assist project management team in development and implementation of an effective job site communications plan. Communicate often and clearly with the team.
  • Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality.

Education and Training

  • Four-year degree in construction, engineering or related field or equivalent combination of technical training and/or related experience.
  • Minimum of four years construction experience with minimum of three years in a supervisory capacity. Experience with healthcare, higher education, and/or laboratory projects with a commercial general contractor preferred.
  • Experience with self-performing work in excavation, concrete, and finish carpentry preferred.
  • Profitable track record.

  • Ability to meet or beat project schedules.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to handle multiple personnel and technical issues simultaneously on an ongoing basis.
